Properties of acids

 They are corrosive.

 Taste sour.
 Reactive with metals.
 Turn blue litmus paper red.
 Conduct electricity.
 They are neutralized by bases.
Acids

 Compounds that when dissolved in water release a

hydrogen ion (H+)
Common acids

 Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)

 Nitric Acid (HNO3)
 Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4)
Properties of bases

 Caustic.
 Bitter taste.
 Have a soapy, slimy feel.
 Conduct electricity
 Turn red litmus paper blue.
 They are neutralized by acids.
 Known as an alkali.
Bases

 A compound that when dissolved in water releases a

hydroxide ion (OH-)
Common bases

 Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)

 Ammonia (NH3)
The strength of an acid or base depends on how many
hydrogen or hydroxide ions are released.
Measuring acidity

 The pH scale
 Measures the concentration of H+ ions in a solution
High concentration of H+ ions means low number on the pH scale
= very acidic.
Measuring pH

 pH meter – electronic equipment

which determines pH

 Indicators – chemicals that change colour to

show pH
Universal indicator
Litmus paper
