within the rules of the games that they play.

 We will look at ways the certain sports try to make sure that players
behave the way that they want them too.
Sporting Behavior

 Sport needs people to follow written and unwritten

rules to make it fair. It expects people to behave
responsibly to ensure respect, fairness and safety.

 Anyone taking part in sport must take personal

responsibility and behave in a certain way which
follows the rules and the expected behaviors of the
sport they are playing.
Rules and Etiquette

Rules
 Participants must follow the rules of the sport.
 These are made by the people in charge of the and are made to be
followed by officials during play.
 Rules make sure that play is safe and fair. Players are penalized if they
do not respect the rules or the officials.

Etiquette
 Sport also has unwritten rules or customs – etiquette – to uphold
respect and fairness.
 E.g., Shaking hands with opponents before and after an important
football match
Sportsmanship

 Sportsmanship means playing within the rules and understanding and

using sports etiquette.

 It is playing fairly in the spirit of the game, showing respect and fair
play to opponents and graciousness in both victory and defeat.

 Sportsmanship includes:

1. Kicking the ball out when someone is injured in football and the
other team giving possession back.
2. Helping a rival player up if they are down injured.
Cheating

 Cheating in sports is the breaking of rules on purpose to get an

advantage over the other teams or players.

 Cheating should be punished by officials who are in charge the game or

the people who are in charge of the sport.

 Cheaters don’t always get caught at the time helping their team to win but
they can still be punished later.

 Examples of cheating: Diving, fouling, match fixing.

Gamesmanship

 This is when players don’t break the rules, but they try to bend
the rules in a way that doesn’t show much etiquette or
sportsmanship to gain an advantage.

 What the player does might not be incorrect to do in the game or

isn’t a rule in a game, but it might something that people know
they shouldn’t do.
