SPE-176481-MS Deep Water Reservoir Characterization and Its Challenges in Field Development Drilling Campaign, Kutei Basin, Indonesia-A Case Study

This document discusses reservoir characterization and challenges in a drilling campaign in the Jangkrik field in Indonesia. It summarizes the reservoir characterization process, which requires integrating geology, geophysics, petrophysics, and reservoir engineering. Specifically, it analyzed seismic data to characterize the deep water slope channel reservoirs and identified uncertainties in reservoir geometry, shallow hazards, drilling high-angle wells, and petrophysics in thin beds that posed challenges for the drilling campaign.

RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION

 Geophysics (1)
 There are 2 seismic data sets (2010 PSTM and 2014 Broadband)
 Seismic interpretation, seismic attribute extraction, AVO analysis had
been performed to characterize the reservoir.

RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION

 Geophysics (2)
 Isochore maps were generated based on top and base interpretation
in order to estimate the gross thickness of reservoirs.
 Spectral Decomposition attribute was generated to investigate the
thickness distribution of reservoir targets.

RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION

 Geophysics (3)
 Seismic Wedge Modelling analysis was performed to understand the
response of amplitude vs thickness.
 Dim amplitude does not necessarily
correspond to thin or poor quality
reservoir. It could indicate thick good
quality reservoirs.

RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION
 Geology (1)
 Based on seismic interpretation and amplitude map extraction, the
reservoirs demonstrate a slope channel geometry.
 Width of seismic anomalies interpreted as deep water channels is
50 m - 400 m
 The channels were deposited in the deep water confined system that
is characterized by relatively straight channels bodies.

RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION

 Geology (2)
 The GR log shows that the reservoir rocks are characterized by blocky and
fining-upward sequence (bell shape).
 By-pass features were found in core datadeep water channel complexes

RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION

 Petrophysics
 Reservoir of Jangkrik Complex is characterized by thin bed layers.
 The measured log values may not represent the true bed or layer properties.
 The alternation of thin beds could affect the resistivity values.
 The conventional Sw calculation could over estimate the actual Sw.
 To overcome this issue, the combination of 3 axial resistivity/density image tool is
mandatory. Image Log

CHALLENGES IN DRILLING CAMPAIGN

 Reservoir Geometry Uncertainties

 Shallow Geohazard Risk

 High Deviated Wells

 Reservoir Depth uncertainty implication to reservoir penetration

 Petrophysics analysis in thin beds reservoirs

 Change well drilling sequence in the middle of drilling campaign

CONCLUSIONS
 Reservoir Characterization summary :
 Reservoir type is a slope channel complex as product of deep water
sedimentation process.
 Unconsolidated sand character with good to excellent porosity and
permeability (ϕ : 0.22 – 0.30, K >100 mD)
 Typically contain thin beds of shale-silt-sand lamination.

 There is a significant level of uncertainty associated with the reservoir

geometries due to seismic resolution & low number of penetrations
per segment.
 Validating the reservoir targets has been performed using all
subsurface data in order to confirm the quality of targets penetration
for each well.

CONCLUSIONS

 Each well proposal is accompanied by a contingency plan with

backup locations and sampling programs to counter an unexpected
outcome.
 Challenges in the development drilling campaign of the Jangkrik
Complex project have been identified in order to mitigate the
subsurface risks.
 A good coordination among departments is a must for achieving the
optimum results of project.
