WHAT IS MOVIE?
A recording of moving images that tells a story and
that people watch on a screen or television.
HOW IT IS PART OF POP
CULTURE?
Movies shape cultural attitudes and customs, influencing the beliefs, opinions, and
behaviors of the people who see them. The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) holds
an annual competition for local cinema to upgrade the quality of Filipino cinema and
convince viewers to patronize local products made by major production houses.
Filipino films have different impacts than foreign ones, such as teaching us key Filipino
values such as family, basic needs, and resilience.
MOVIE AS AN IDENTITY
OF A FILIPINO
Filipino movies have been overtaken by foreign media products such as Hollywood movies,
video games, cable TV and the two local giant television networks, ABS-CBN and GMA.
The presence of Hollywood films since the early 20th century has turned it into a model by
which Filipino movies were made and appraised, making the Filipino movie industry a
caricature of Hollywood. Indie films, which are low-budget films produced by smaller
production houses, started in the 70s and were led by alternative filmmakers like Ishmael
Bernal, Lino Brocka, Mike De Leon, Mario O'Hara, and Kidlat Tahimik. This movement was
continued in the 2000s and was awarded and recognized by international award-giving
bodies.
The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film
Festival is a film festival in the Philippines held
annually during the month August at the Cultural
Center of the Philippines Complex and various
cinemas. Its aim is the development and
promotion of Filipino independent films.
The Metro Manila Film Festival is an annual film festival
held in Metro Manila, Philippines. The festival, which
runs from December 25 through New Year's Day and into
first weekend of January in the following year, focuses on
Filipino films.

FOREIGN TREND
The Influence of Hollywood In the movie industry today, publicity and
product are two sides of the same coin. Even films that get a lousy critical
reception can do extremely well in ticket sales if their marketing
campaigns manage to create enough hype. Similarly, two comparable
films can produce very different results at the box office if they have
been given different levels of publicity
FOREIGN TREND
The Blockbuster Standard While it may seem like the major studios are
making heavy profits, moviemaking today is a much riskier, less
profitable enterprise than it was in the studio system era. The massive
budgets required for the global marketing of a film are huge financial
gambles. In fact, most movies cost the studios much more to market and
produce—upward of $100 million—than their box-office returns ever
generate.
FOREIGN TREND
The Role of Independent Films While the blockbuster still drives the
industry, the formulaic nature of most Hollywood films of the 1980s,
1990s, and into the 2000s has opened a door for independent films to
make their mark on the industry.
FOREIGN TREND
The Role of Foreign Films Major Hollywood studio films have
dominated the movie industry worldwide since Hollywood’s golden age,
yet American films have always been in a relationship of mutual
influence with films from foreign markets.
FOREIGN TREND
The Economics of Movies With control of over 95 percent of U.S. film production,
the big six Hollywood studios (Warner Bros., Paramount, 20th Century Fox,
Universal, Columbia, and Disney) are at the forefront of the American film
industry, setting the standards for distribution, release, marketing, and production
values. However, the high costs of moviemaking today are such that even
successful studios must find moneymaking potential in crossover media computer
games, network TV rights, spin-off TV series, DVD and releases on Blu-ray Disc
format, toys and other merchandise, books, and other after-market products to help
recoup their losses.
FOREIGN TREND
Piracy Movie piracy used to be perpetrated in two ways: Either someone
snuck into a theater with a video camera, turning out blurred, wobbly,
off-colored copies of the original film, or somebody close to the film
leaked a private copy intended for reviewers. In the digital age, however,
crystal-clear bootlegs of movies on DVD and the Internet are
increasingly likely to appear illegally, posing a much greater threat to a
film’s profitability. Even safeguard techniques like digital watermarks are
frequently sidestepped by tech-savvy pirates (France, 2009).

SIGNIFICANCE

SIGNIFICANCE
Movies are essential to society because they reflect culture, change
culture, and spur economic growth. Cinema is a reflection of its own
society. Movies reflect a culture in so many ways. Think about the
messages of your favourite movies and how those messages have
influenced you. Just as movies reflect the anxieties, beliefs, and values of
the cultures that produce them, they also help to shape and solidify a
culture's beliefs. Sometimes the influence is trivial, as in the case of
fashion trends or figures of speech.
SHAPING LIVES
People often love human watching and discussing movies. The cinematography is just like
music or hobbies, a vital part of their lives. Watching a movie can either make your life better,
destroy it, or have a neutral or no impact. In today’s world , some of the most popular genres of
cinema/ movies today are Anime, Drama, Comedy, Horror, Fantasy, Action. Each of these
genres of movies can have both positive and negative impacts on young people. But, there is no
universal opinion as to whether watching movies has more pros or cons. While some studies
indicate that violent films make people aggressive and dangerous, other surveys highlight the
benefits of showing some specific films to students.

CONCLUSION
Without a doubt, movies are a part of our cultural heritage. They are a
crucial component of the artistic and historic wealth that our Constitution
recognizes as being valuable to our culture and heritage. It can explore
important social issues or entertain while educating. Films have the power
to stir up our interest, teach us about unfamiliar cultures, provide us with
fresh insights, or simply widen our perspectives. We enjoy watching
movies because they entertain us and challenge our preconceptions.
THANK YOU!!
