    1.GENERALLY, WHEN WE THINK OF THE TERM “FILIPINO POLITICIAN,” WHAT INEVITABLY
    COMES TO OUR MINDS IS “CORRUPT, ARROGANT, AND INCOMPETENT.” WE CAN’T HELP IT
    THOUGH SINCE OUR OWN POLITICIANS LARGELY CONTRIBUTED TO THAT NEGATIVE PUBLIC
    PERCEPTION OF THEMSELVES WITH ALL THEIR POLITICAL CIRCUSES AND SHENANIGANS.

    2. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE INDEED SOME TRULY GOOD ONES IN THE MIX, THEY ARE FAR AND
    FEW IN-BETWEEN NOWADAYS. WHAT’S WORSE, THEIR LIKE-MINDED PREDECESSORS—MEN
    OF INTEGRITY AND HONOR WHO TOOK PUBLIC OFFICE TO ACTUALLY SERVE OTHERS—ARE
    LONG GONE FROM US, IN A TIME WHEN WE NEED THEM THE MOST.
    3. LOOKING BACK AT THE TIME OF OUR FOREMOST POLITICAL LEADERS, THEIR THOUGHTS
    AND ACTIONS PLAYED A BIG PART TO THE NATIONHOOD WE FILIPINOS ARE ALL BENEFITING
    FROM NOW.
    4. THEIR NATIONALISM HAS BECOME THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL REVOLT FROM ALL THE
    COLONIZER AND CONQUERORS OUR COUNTRY HAS ENDURED. THE PHILIPPINES HAD BEEN
    A SPANISH COLONY SINCE 1565, AND SINCE THAT TIME NUMEROUS REVOLTS BROKE OUT
    CHALLENGING SPANISH RULE. THESE REVOLTS WERE DISUNITED, HOWEVER, UNTIL THE
    NINETEENTH CENTURY WHEN NATIONALISM BROUGHT FORTH A MORE UNITED ANTI-
    COLONIAL MOVEMENT. THIS CULMINATED IN A REVOLUTION THAT BROKE OUT IN 1896.
    AFTER MUCH FIGHTING, A STALEMATE ENSUED, LEADING TO A CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT
    BETWEEN FILIPINO AND SPANISH LEADERS.

    5. THE WAY THEY BELIEVED THAT THE PHILIPPINES MUST BE RULED BY FILIPINOS PLAY A PIVOTAL
    ROLE ON THE SUCCESS WE HAVE GARNERED AFTER A VERY LONG STRUGGLE FOR LIBERTY. OUR
    PREDECESSOR BELIEVED THAT EVERY PERSON LIVING IN THE PHILIPPINES HAD THE RIGHT TO
    PARTICIPATE IN THEIR OWN FORM OF GOVERNMENT AND TO CREATE A NATION-STATE THAT ADHERED
    TO THEIR OWN RULES AND CUSTOMS.

    AS FILIPINISM. THIS WAS IN AN ATTEMPT TO BRING ABOUT POLITICAL, SOCIAL, AND
    ECONOMIC REFORMS TO THE PHILIPPINES.
