Mathematics 4 Quarter 3 Lesson 52: Identifying and Describing Quadrilaterals

Here are the steps to draw each quadrilateral: 1. Square - Draw 4 equal sides with 4 right angles 2. Trapezoid - Draw 1 pair of parallel sides, the other 2 sides are not parallel 3. Rhombus - Draw 4 equal sides but the angles are not right angles 4. Rectangle - Draw 2 pairs of parallel and equal sides with 4 right angles 5. Parallelogram - Draw 2 pairs of parallel sides, the opposite sides are equal length Draw each shape neatly on your graph paper following the descriptions. Take your time and check your work. Bring it to class for checking.

Objective:
1. Identify and describe quadrilaterals
according to sides and angles.
M4GE-IIId-18.2
2. Relate one quadrilateral to another
quadrilateral.
Value: Cleanliness/ Personal Hygiene
Drill:

Game: Giant Step

Feeling Quiz Bee
Draw the geometric figure of the following
descriptions. 10 seconds for each question
1. Triangle whose measure is 90 degrees.
2. It has 3 equal sides.
3. A triangle that has no equal sides.
4. A triangle that measures more than 90 degrees.
5. Triangle that measures less than 90 degrees
Motivation (Health Integration)

Show a handkerchief.
What is this?
Who has also a handkerchief?
*Why do you have your handkerchief?
A handkerchief is used for your personal hygiene. It
is used to keep your body clean.
Motivation

Now, kindly unfold your handkerchief.

What is its shape?

How many sides does it have?

If a polygon has 4 sides, it is called a

quadrilateral.
Presentation

In the Grade 4 class of Mr. Rodriguez, some

pupils prepared cut-outs of quadrilaterals. Jan Dhiel
cut a square. Mary Lyn made a rectangle, Miehl
prepared a rhombus, Roselyn cut a trapezoid, and
Ayessa made a parallelogram. Their outputs were
neat and they cleaned their mess after cutting.

Discussion

*What can you say about their outputs?

What did they do after preparing the cut-outs?

*Is it good to clean your area after doing your activity?

Yes, it is good to be neat and clean all the time because

cleanliness is next to godliness.
Performing the Activities

Group I - Cut – Group I - Cut -It has 2 pairs of

parallel sides and all sides are equal.
Group II - Draw–It is a quadrilateral that has 4
equal sides. All angles are acute angles.
Group III - Color – It is a quadrilateral that has 4
right angles. Its opposite sides are parallel.
Group IV - Paste - It has only one pair of opposite
sides that are parallel.

What have you observed about the

quadrilaterals?

What can you say about the sides? the angles?

Explore and Discover!

Look at the different quadrilaterals.

square rhombus rectangle

trapezoid parallelogram
A quadrilateral is a polygon with 4 sides and 4
angles. The following are the different
quadrilaterals.

A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides

and its opposite sides are equal.

A rhombus is a parallelogram that has 4 equal

sides.
A rectangle is a parallelogram that
has 4 right angles. Its opposite sides
are equal.

A square is a parallelogram that has 4

equal sides and 4 right angles.

A trapezoid has only one pair of

opposite sides that are parallel.
GET Moving!

Game: Pass it On
Mechanics:

The ball will pass on to the class as the music plays.

When the music stops, the pupil holding the ball will
identify the quadrilateral presented on the slide.
Identify the following quadrilaterals. Tell if it is
square, rectangle, trapezoid, rhombus, or
parallelogram.
1. 2. 3.
rectangle square rhombus

4. 5.
trapezoid parallelogram

(The pupils will hyperlink their answers

by clicking their choice.)
Keep Moving!

Directions: Answer the following

questions.
Click Yes or No.
Keep Moving!

1. Is a parallelogram a rectangle?

Yes . No

A rectangle is considered a special case of a parallelogram because: Aparallelogram is a

quadrilateral with 2 pairs of opposite, equal and parallel sides.
Keep Moving!

2. Is a trapezoid a parallelogram?

Yes No.

A trapezoid has one pair of parallel sides and a

parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides.
Keep Moving!

3. Is a square a rectangle?

Yes No
So a square is a special kind of rectangle, it is one where all the sides have the same
length. Thus every square is a rectangle because it is a quadrilateral with all four angles
right angles. However not every rectangle is a square, to be a squareits sides must have
the same length.
Keep Moving!

4. Is a rectangle a parallelogram?

Yes.
No
A rectangle is considered a special case of a parallelogram because:
Aparallelogram is a quadrilateral with 2 pairs of opposite, equal and parallel sides.
Arectangle is a quadrilateral with 2 pairs of opposite, equal and parallel sides
APPLY YOUR
SKILLS

•Compare square and rectangle.

•Compare rhombus and parallelogram.
