Capacitor

Capacitor is one of the few passive component.

Unlike resistor, capacitor display their total
characteristic when a change in voltage or current is
made in the circuit in which they exist.
In addition, if we consider the ideal situation, they
do not dissipate energy as does the resistor but store
it in a form that can be returned to the circuit
whenever required by the circuit design
Type Of Capacitor

Fixed capacitor
Variable Capacitor
The Electric Field

This electric field is represented by electric flux lines,

which are drawn to indicate the strength of the
electric field at any point around the charged body;
that is, the denser the lines of flux, the stronger the
electric field, where :

Answer 3
Dielectric Strength

 The voltage per unit required per unit length (electric field
intensity) to establish conduction in a dielectric is an
indication of its dielectric strength and is called the
breakdown voltage.
 When breakdown occurs, the capacitor has characteristics
very similar to those of a conductor
 A typical example of breakdown is lightning, which occurs
when the potential between the clouds and the earth is so
high that charge can pass from one to the other through the
atmosphere, which acts as the dielectric
Example 4

Find the maximum voltage that can be applied across

a 0.2-mF capacitor having a plate area of 0.3 m2. The
dielectric is porcelain. Assume a linear relationship between
the dielectric strength and
the thickness of the dielectric.
Answer
Leakage Current

 Up to this point, we have assumed that the flow of electrons

will occur in a dielectric only when the breakdown voltage
is reached.
 When a voltage is applied across the plates of a capacitor, a
leakage current due to the free electrons flows from one
plate to the other.
