A DANGER TO US?
Outline

INTRODUCTION
FINDINGS
CONCLUSION
Introduction

• Television is a medium that can greatly impact public opinion and the way
people perceive things. T.V manipulation refer to the use of techniques that
influence audiences' attitudes, perceptions behaviours. On the other hand, it
is argued that it is a powerful tool that can be used to inform, educate and
entertain the audience
FINDINGS

One of the main arguments for TV manipulation is that it can be used as a tool
for persuasion.
Example: Advertisements
TV advertisements are designed to persuade viewers to purchase a product or
service.
WHAT TECHNIQUES?
Emotional appeals

Celebrity endorsements

Scarcity

This (Emotional Appeals) technique is based on the idea that people are
more likely to do something if they see that others are doing it.
Celebrity endorsements
• Celebrity endorsements can be effective because they create a sense of trust
and credibility, and people are more likely to trust the opinions of someone
they admire.
Scarcity

• Advertisements often create a sense of scarcity by emphasizing that there are

limited quantities of a product or a limited time to take advantage of a special
offer.
FINDINGS
• On the other hand, those who are against TV manipulation argue that it can
be used to mislead and manipulate viewers, particularly through the use of
selective editing and the reinforcement of stereotypes
FINDINGS
This technique, known as "distortion of reality through editing," can
manipulate viewers' perceptions and opinions by presenting a biased
or misleading version of events

• It does not stop there; they also use dramatic music or sound
effects. Programs may use dramatic music or sound effects to manipulate
viewers' emotions and create a certain mood or atmosphere

This can be used to create a sense of tension, suspense, or

danger, even when the events being portrayed are not
particularly dramatic
FINDINGS
• Overrepresentation or Underrepresentation
TV shows and movies can reinforce stereotypes by
overrepresenting or underrepresenting certain groups.

For example, if certain groups are underrepresented or

portrayed in a negative light, this can create the
impression that these groups are not important or
valuable members of society.
CONCLUSION
• T.V manipulation is like double-edged sword.
On one hand, it can be a powerful tool for persuasion

On the other hand, it can also be used to mislead and

manipulate viewers in harmful ways.
