Module 2:

CLIMATE

John Harvie E. Romeroso

Target:
 Explain how different factors affect
the climate of an area; and
 Describe certain climatic phenomena
that occur on global level;
WHAT SHOULD I LEARN?
For this module:
 What are the factors that affect
climate?
 How does each factor affect climate?
 What is climate change?
For this module:
 What are the negative effects of
climate change?
 How can we lessen the bad effects of
global warming?
For Today:
 How is weather different from
climate?
 How does the latitude affects the
climate of an area?
Let me ask
you…
WEATHER
 The prevailing condition of the
atmosphere at a particular time and
place.
 Usually described as sunny, cloudy,
windy, rainy, or stormy.
CLIMATE
 The general pattern of weather in a
certain area over a long period of
time.
 The average weather of a region often
measured over many years.
FACTORS AFFECTING
CLIMATE
• LATITUDE (DISTANCE FROM THE EQUATOR)
Activity 1: When the Sun’s
Rays Strike!
 Objective
– Explain
how
latitude
affects
climate
Guide Questions
1. How much is the tilt of the earth’s
axis?
2. Which part of the earth receives
most of the sun’s rays?
Guide Questions
3. Why does the amount of heat
received by places far from the
equator becomes less?
4. Why are the coldest places on earth
found near the poles?
Guide Questions
5. Why are places with high
temperatures found at the equator?
6. How does the latitude affects
climate?
Here’s the thing:
 Group 1: Poem
 Group 2: Short skit/Role Play
 Group 3: Poem
 Group 4: Short skit/Role Play
 Group 5: Song/Jingle
Distance from the equator
Latitude
 At the Poles
– Energy of the sun reaches Earth’s surface
at lower angles.
– Passes through thick layers of the
atmosphere than the equator.
– Farther from the equator – cool climate
Latitude
 At the Poles
– Greatest difference in days length
between summer and winter.
– In, summer, no sunset within 24 hrs.
– In winter, total darkness, no sun for 24
hrs.
ANY QUESTION OR
CLARIFICATION
To sum it up:
 What regions of the world receives
much amount of sun’s rays?
 Describe the climate in this region.
 What regions receives less amount
of sun’s rays?
To sum it up:
 Describe the climate in this region?
 What is the relationship between the
latitude and air temperature in the
world?

To look back:
 What regions of the world receives
much amount of sun’s rays?
 Describe the climate in this region.
 What regions receives less amount
of sun’s rays?
To look back:
 Describe the climate in this region?
 What is the relationship between the

Activity 2: The higher, the
Colder
 Objective
– Explain how altitude affects climate
 Materials
– Pencil or ballpen, ruler, graphing paper
Activity 2: The higher, the
Colder
 Procedure
– Study the table below and make a
scatter graph based on the given data.
Guide Questions
1. Which place is the coldest? What is
its temperature?
2. Which place is the hottest? What is
its temperature?
Guide Questions
3. Based on the data, what is the
relationship between altitude and
temperature of a place?
Altitude
 Refers to the height above the level
of the sea.
 The altitude of a place affects the air
temperature.
Mt. Kilimanjaro
(Africa)

It stands
5895m
above sea
level.

 The peak is covered with ice. Why?

It has an
elevation of
Baguio City 1435m above
sea level.
Has an
annual
average
temp. of 16°C
 Why do people visit this place during summer?
Mountain
Climbing
 Why do
mountain
climbers use
thick clothes
and jacket
when they For every 1000m, temp. drops
go up the by 6.5°C. At higher elevations,
mountain? there is less air.
ANY QUESTION OR
CLARIFICATION
To sum it up:
 By how many degrees Celsius does
the air temperature drops every
1000m above sea level?
 Why does it happen?
To sum it up:
 What is the relationship between
altitude and air temperature?
 What is its effect to the climate of
the place?
