    HEARING
    refers to the physical process of sound waves
    entering our ears and being processed by our
    brains. Hearing can occur without active listening,
    such as when we hear background noise or
    someone talking to us but we are not actively
    engaged in the conversation.
    LISTENING
    refers to the active process of paying attention and
    making meaning out of what we hear. Listening,
    however, requires attention, focus, and intention. It
    involves making an effort to understand the meaning
    of what is being communicated and responding
    appropriately.
