Introduction
Design and construction

• Architect(s) - Kohn Pedersen Fox, The Jerde Partnership

• Structural engineer - Arup

• Main contractor - Mori Building Company

• Roppongi Hills Mori Tower is a 54-story mixed-use skyscraper

( 54 above ground and 6 underground) in Roppongi, Minato,
Tokyo.

• Completed in 2003 and named after builder Minoru Mori, it is

the centerpiece of the Roppongi Hills urban development.

• It is the sixth-tallest building in Tokyo at 238 meters (781 ft).

• The Mori Tower building is primarily used for office space, but it
also includes retail stores, restaurants and other attractions.

• The Mori Art Museum is located on the 53rd floor and visitors
can view the city from observation decks on the 52nd and 54th
floors.

Before Development After Development

Earthquake Zone

"Pacific Ring of Fire".

The Ring of Fire is a zone where several of the earth’s continental and
oceanic plates meet.
In very simple terms, when the plates collide, suddenly break or become
displaced along these lines, an earthquake or volcanic activity occurs.
Design of the Tower Structure
The building is designed in a box-like
shape with a central core and columns for
stability.

Foundation Seismic Isolation

Mori Tower is built on a base of The tower is isolated from the
reinforced concrete and a steel ground by rubber bearings, which

it possible to cast sections of up to 100 m in height without segregation of the aggregates due to gravity.

Seismic Isolators
What is Seismic Isolators ?

A seismic isolation bearing is used to protect structures from earthquake

damage, minimizing the disruption to people's lives. Therefore, the demand
for seismic isolation bearing is increasing day by day.

A combination of two types of seismic isolators, lead plug laminated rubber

bearings and high-strength laminated rubber bearings, enables structures to
resist the tensile force of an earthquake, reduce vibration to one-half to one-
fourth, and prevent damage to structural members

The "Seismic Base Isolation System" is installed between the ground and the
upper structure. The isolated rubber bearing proven to be an ideal solution for
seismic base isolation.
Oil Dampers
• In systems using oil dampers, the resistance generated
when the oil in the cylinders moves absorbs building
vibration.

• Sensors installed in the devices detect small vibrations,

and the oil is rapidly forced to move in a controlled
manner.

• This shock-absorber effect not only serves to dampen

vibration during a large earthquake, but also serves to
reduce vibration and swaying caused by medium and
small earthquakes and by wind.

• Mori Tower has 356 oil dampers installed in columns

and beams in the building. This creates an excellent
earthquake-resistant system.

• The dampers used in the building are semi-active and

consists of 192 shock absorbers which are filled with
thick oil.

• When the building shakes during an earthquake, the

dampers counterbalance the shaking with the oil
sliding in the opposite direction to minimize the
tremors.
CFT Pillars
Steel tubes filled with high-strength concrete are placed in
the pillars that form the framework of the buildings.

This provides superior resistance compared to conventional

construction methods.

These pillars with excellent bending strength are part of the

construction of Mori Tower.

grade of earthquake resistance performance
in Japan
Benefits:
Of Mori Tower

Economic: Mori Tower is an economical choice due to its low maintenance costs.
Environmental: The building has a low environmental impact due to its earthquake-resistant design.
Aesthetic: The tower’s modern design gives it a unique look compared to other buildings in the area.
Steel
The tower uses high-strength steel for the columns
and beams for added durability.

Concrete:
The foundation and core are built with reinforced
concrete for strength and stability.

Composites:
Special materials are used in the joints to allow for
