Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

The document defines cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as an emergency procedure using chest compressions and artificial ventilation to manually preserve brain function until spontaneous circulation and breathing can be restored in a person experiencing cardiac arrest. It lists the learning objectives and indications for CPR, equipment used, and steps of the procedure which include checking for responsiveness, calling for help, giving 30 chest compressions and 2 breaths in sets until an AED is available or emergency services arrive. Students are assigned to research complications of CPR.

2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Accurately define Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
2. Summarize the indications of CPR.
3. Identify the equipment used during cardiopulmonary resuscitation
4. List and explain each step of CPR.

3 DEFINITION

• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation ( CPR) is an emergency

procedure consisting of chest compressions often combined
with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact
brain function until further measures are taken to restore
spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is
in cardiac arrest.

4 INDICATIONS FOR CPR

• Sudden Collapse: Check for breathing and a pulse.

• Unconsciousness: Try to wake the person. ...
• Breathing Problems: No breathing or limited breathing may call
for CPR.
• No Pulse: If a pulse can’t be felt, the heart may have stopped.

5 EQUIPMENT USED DURING CPR

• Two FDA-approved adult exhaled air resuscitation masks

• Two FDA-approved pediatric (child) exhaled air resuscitation
masks
• Four pairs of disposable gloves
• Information Label on the equipment

6 PROCEDURE

• CHECK the scene for safety, form an initial impression and use personal
protective equipment (PPE).
• If the person appears unresponsive, CHECK for responsiveness, breathing, life-
threatening bleeding or other life-threatening conditions using shout-tap-shout.
• If the person does not respond and is not breathing or only gasping, CALL 9-1-
1 and get equipment, or tell someone to do so.
• Place the person on their back on a firm, flat surface.

7 CONT.

Give 30 chest compressions

• Hand position: Two hands centered on the chest
• Body position: Shoulders directly over hands; elbows locked
• Depth: At least 2 inches
• Rate: 100 to 120 per minute
• Allow chest to return to normal position after each compression

8 CONT.

Give 2 breaths
• Open the airway to a past-neutral position using the
head-tilt/chin-lift technique
• Ensure each breath lasts about 1 second and makes the chest
rise; allow air to exit before giving the next breath

9 CONT.

• Continue giving sets of 30 chest compressions and 2 breaths.

Use an AED as soon as one is available.
