The 5 E Model in Planning Science Lessons

The 5E model is an instructional model for teaching science that consists of 5 phases: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. [1] It was developed in 1987 based on earlier research on effective learning cycles. [2] Each phase has a distinct purpose - Engage piques student interest, Explore allows hands-on exploration, Explain facilitates discussion, Elaborate applies concepts, and Evaluate assesses understanding. [3] Sample teaching strategies are provided for each phase.

The 5 E Model in Planning

Science Lessons
Learning activities
• In 1962,educators J. Myron Atkin and Robert Karplus
propositioned that effective learning cycles involve three
key elements: exploration,concept introduction and
concept application. The findings of Atkin and Karplus
informed the creation of the 5E model. This teaching
model focuses on providing students opportunity to
understand a concept over time through a series of steps or
phrases: ENGAGE,EXPLORE,EXPLAIN,ELABORATE,
and EVALUATE.
• The 5E model was developed in 1987 by the Biological
Sciences Curriculum Study.
Learning objectives
At the end of the lesson l,you are expected to:

• Discuss distinct features of the 5E model

• Describe each of the elements of the 5E model
• Examine a sample lesson plan usng 5E model
• Gather examples of 5E model instructional plans
• Revise an instructional plan using 5E model
• Intervie teachers on the effectiveness and applicability of 5E model in
the classroom
• Make generalizations and recommendations based on interview
findings.
Engage

Evaluate Explore
5 E’s
Science Lesson

Elaborate Explain
Engage

Activity which will focus student’s

attention, stimulate their thinking,
and access prior knowledge.
Explore

Activity which gives students time to

think and investigate/test/make
decisions/problem solve, and collect
information.
Explain

Activity which allows students to

analyze their exploration. Student’s
understanding is clarified and
modified through a reflective activity.
Elaborate

Activity which expands and solidifies

student thinking and/or applies it to a
real-world situation.
Evaluate

Activity which allows the teacher to

assess student performance and/or
understandings of concepts, skills,
processes, and applications.

What the Teacher Does

Determine the students prior knowledge and

knowledge gaps
Foster an interest in the upcoming concepts
Prepare the students to learn new concepts
• Introduce topic for the first time
Engage
Sample Teaching Strategies/Activities

Asking opening questions

Write down what they already know about the topic
Maps of conceptual change
Analyze a Graphic Organizer
KWL
• Brainstorming
Explore
What the Teacher Does

Allow the students to actively explore the new

concept through concrete learning experiences
Guide the students in going through the scientific
method
• Let the students make observations and share
findings to their peers
Explore
Sample Teaching Strategies/Activities

Laboratory experiments
Scientific method drills
Hands on activities
Performance tasks
• Field work
Explain
What the Teacher Does

• Facilitate a discussion and synthesis of new

knowledge
• Have the students ask questions for clarification
• Have the students share their insights and feelings
about the activity in the EXPLORE stage
• Discuss scientific terms and concepts
• Utilize videos,multimedia,software,games or other
tools to boost understanding of concepts and
science processes
Explain
Sample Teaching Strategies/Activities

Interactive discussion
Viewing clips,documentaries
Reading online discussions and materials like
Khan Academy,online encyclopedias
• Taking computer assisted interactive games
Elaborate
What the Teacher Does
• Give the students space and oppurtunity to apply
what they have learned
• Ask the student to create presentations or conduct
additional investigations to reinforce skills
• Allow the students to establish knowledge before
evaluation
Elaborate
Sample Teaching Strategies/Activities

• Creating digital or print infographics to

illustrate learning
• Creating slide presentations
• Jigsaw discussions
• Fishbowl discussions
Evaluate
What the Teacher Does

• Conduct formal and informal assessments to

check the students content and performance
mastery
• Observe the students to see whether they have a
complete grasp of core concepts
• Note how the students approach problems
• Recognize that there are multiple ways to
approach and solve a problem
Evaluate
Sample Teaching Strategies/Activities

• Self-assessments
• Peer-assessments
• Paper-and-pen tests
• Objective tests
• Performance tasks
• Game-based exams
