The purpose of report text is to present
information about something. It usually
describes an entire class of things or describes
things in general way, whether natural or man-
made like mammals, the planets, rocks, plants,
countries of region, culture, transportation, and
so on.

The Generic structure of
report text
1. General Clasification = Statements that describe the common subject of the
report, common, description and classification.

2. Description = Tells what the phenomenon under discussion; in terms


of parts, qualities, habits or behaviors; this section gives us
an overview of commonly occurring phenomenon, either of its
parts, its properties, habit, or behavior. The points is, presenting
elaboration of scientific classification.

There are also some information on the generic structure, which includes :
1. General information, is the part that mentions the general information of the
theme of writing.
2. Bundles of specific information, give us the elaboration of general information.

The language feature of
report text
• Use of general nouns, Ex. Hunting Pandas, rather than particular nouns,
Ex. My panda.

• Use of relating verbs to describe features, Ex. “ pandas are cute animal”.

• Some use of action verbs when describing behavior, Ex.“ Pandas cannot
run”.

• Use of timeless present tense to indicate usualness, Ex.“ Tropical cyclones


always begin over the sea ”.

• Use of technical terms, Ex. Isobars are lines drawn on a weather map.

• Use of paragraphs with topic sentences to arganise bundles of information,


repeated naming of the topic as the beginning focus of the clause.

The Example and analysis
of report text
ELEPHANT

An elephant is the largest and strongers of all animals. It is a strange looking animal
which it has thick legs, huge sides and backs, large hanging ears, a small tail, little
eyes, long white tusks and above all, elephant has a long nose, the trunk. An
elephant is commonly seen in a zoo, it has hard found in it natural habitat.
The trunk is the elephant’s peculiar feature. This trunk has various usages. The
elephant draws up water by its trunk and can squirts the water all over its body like
a shower bath. The elephant’s trunk also lift leaves and put them into its mouth. In
fact, the trunk server the elephant as long arm and hand. An elephant looks very
clumsy and heavy and yet an elephant can move very quickly.
The elephant is very intelligent animal. Its intelligence combined with is great
strenght makes an elephant a very useful servant to man. Elephant can be trained to
serve in various ways such as carry heavy loads, hunt for tigers and even fight. An
elephant is really a smart animal.
