31 Solution of A System of Linear Equations 1

The document discusses determining if an ordered pair is a solution to a system of linear equations by substituting the values of the ordered pair into each equation and checking if both equations are satisfied. It provides examples of checking ordered pairs for different systems of linear equations and identifying if they are solutions or not solutions. Key steps involve substituting the x and y values of the ordered pair into each equation and determining if the resulting equations are both true statements.

Solution of a

System of Linear Equations

OBJECTIVE

 Determine if an ordered pair is a

solution to the system of equation.
Systems of Linear Equations

A system of linear equation is a set of

two or more equations of the same
variables in each equation.
EXAMPLES

x+y=5 y = -2x + 4
2x – 3y = 12 y=3-x
x+y=0
3x + y = -8
Solution of a System

A solution of a system of equations is

an ordered set of numbers that
makes all equations in the system
true.
Examples:

Determine whether the point is a solution of

the given system of linear equations or not.
1. 5x + y = 10 ; ( 2, 0)
4x – y = 9

2. x + 2y = 6 ; ( -2, 4)
3x – y = -10
3. 2x + y = 6 ; ( 5, -5)
4x + 6y = 20
Solution:
1. 5x + y = 10 ; ( 2, 0)
TI O N
4x – y = 9 NOT SOLU
In both equations, replace x with 2 and y with 0
Equation 1: 5x + y = 10
5(2) + 0 = 10
10 + 0 = 10
10 = 10 True
Equation 2: 4x – y = 9
4(2) – 0 = 9
8–0 =9
8≠9 False

 ( 2, 0) does not satisfy both equations. Therefore, it is not a solution of the

given system of linear equations.
Solution:
IO N
2. x + 2y = 6 ; ( -2, 4)
LU T
3x – y = -10
SO
In both equations, replace x with -2 and y with 4
Equation 1: x + 2y = 6
-2 + 2(4) = 6
-2 + 8 = 6
6=6 True
Equation 2: 3x – y = -10
3(-2) – 4 = -10
-6 – 4 = -10
-10 = -10 True
 Since (-2, 4) is solution of both equations, it is a
solution to the system of equations.
Solution: 3. 2x + y = 6 ; ( 5, -5)
4x + 6y = 20
UT I ON
O L
Not S
In both equations, replace x with 5 and y with -5
Equation 1: 2x + y = 6
2(5) + (-5) = 6
10 - 5 = 6
5=6 False
Equation 2: 4x + 6y = 20
4(5) + 6(-5) = 20
20 – 30 = 20
-10 = 20 False
 Since (5, -5) does not satisfy both equations. Therefore is
not solution to the system of equations.
