Physical Properties of Rocks

Learning Competency: Describe how rocks turn into soil.

Engagement
(4 mins.)

•Suppose you were to go on a trip to

collect rocks, where will you go to
look for different rocks?

•Do you think you can collect the same

kind of rocks in different places? Why?
Exploration
Standards in Doing Activity (20 mins.)

*Prepare the materials needed.

*Observe silence while doing the activity.
*Cooperate actively in the group.
*Share freely your ideas.
*Be time conscious.
*Leave your area clean.
Group Activity

Group I: Streak Test

Group II: Color
Group III:Hardness
Group IV: Color
Lesson No. 1 Classifying Rocks

Activity 1: Streak Test

Objective: Classify rocks according to their physical
properties.
What you need: samples of rocks, unglazed porcelain tile
What to do:
1. Rub different colored rocks or minerals one after the
other on different sections of an unglazed porcelain tile.
Questions:
1. Is the color of each mark the same as the color of the
material you rubbed?
Which are the same? Which are not the same?
2. Which one produce light color streak? dark color streak?
Activity 2: Color

Objective: Classify rocks according to their physical

properties.

What you need: samples of rocks, hammer, magnifying glass

What to do:
1. Get a piece of rocks. Observe the color of the surface.
2. Break the rock with a hammer.
Precaution: Wrap the rock with a piece of cloth before hammering.
This will prevent the broken pieces from hurting you.
3. Observe the color of the newly cut sides of the rock.

Questions:
1. How many colors do you see?
2. Does the color of the newly cut pieces differ from the original?
Why?
3. Repeat steps 1 to 3 using a different kind of rock. Is the color of
the rock surface the same as the color inside?
Activity 3: Hardness
Objective: Classify rocks according to their physical properties.

What you need: samples of rocks, Moh’s Scale of Hardness and Equivalent Easy Test, coin, knife,
steel file

What to do:
1. Test your rocks in the collection according to hardness. Use the Moh’s scale as basis for
classifying them. Mark the appropriate columns to indicate the degree of the rock’s hardness.
Test for Hardness Rock Number

2. Arrange the rocks in order of their hardness, with the first as the softest.
Activity 4: Cleavage

Objective: Classify rocks according to their

physical properties.

What you need: samples of rocks, hammer

What to do:
1. Hammer samples of rocks.
2. Describe how sample of rocks split.
3. Describe the plane formed after splitting
Activity 5: Luster
Objective: Classify rocks according to their physical
properties.

What you need: silver and gold rocks (if any) or
jewelries, rock samples

What to do:
1. Examine the materials by placing them near
sunlight.
2. Describe how each material reflect light.

Questions:
1. Which rock materials shine? Why?
2. Which materials do not reflect light? Why?
GROUP PRESENTATION
How many samples of rocks did you use?
Where did you get them?
How many groupings of rocks did you make? Explanation
(15 mins.)
What property of rocks is determined in activity one? How it is done?
Rocks are always affected by impurities and color is always affected,
where can you find the real color of rocks?
Did you collect shiny rocks? What do you think is the element/mineral
present in shiny rocks? Can you use these criteria for
classifying rocks? What physical property does it show? (luster)
How did you determine the hardness of rocks?
Are there rocks difficult to break?
What about rocks hard to break?
What is the hardest rock? Softest rock?
What property of rocks did you observe?
In activity 4, what property of rocks is revealed?
Into how many groups did you classify rocks?
Elaboration
(15 mins.)

*Do you think rocks are

important to our environment?
Why?

*Give examples/ways on how

some rocks?
Formative Test Evaluation
(6 mins.)
