Permutation of N Objects Taken at R Time

This document discusses permutations and provides examples of calculating the number of permutations of objects. It begins with learning objectives about formulating the number of permutations of n objects taken r at a time and finding the number of permutations. It then has students work through examples counting possible outfits and ice cream orders. Later it defines a permutation as an arrangement of distinguishable objects in a definite order without repetition and provides the formula to calculate the number of permutations of n objects taken r at a time as nPr=n!/(n-r)!. It concludes with two examples of using the formula to compute specific permutation values.

Permutation of n

objects taken at
r time
LESSON OBJECTIVES

a. Formulate the number of permutation

of n objects taken r at a time.
b. Find the number of permutation of n
objects taken at a time.
c. Appreciate permutations as a vital
part of one’s life.
ACTIVITY 1:
THINK-PAIR-SHARE

Answer the following with your seatmate.

1. You have 3 shirts and 4 pants. How
many possible outfits can you have?
2. There are 6 flavors of ice-cream, and 3
different cones in a grocery store. How many
orders of ice cream can you make?
ACTIVITY 2: AM I
IMPORTANT?
Direction: determine if in doing the
activity or task below, arrangement or
order of selecting the objects is
important. Write I if it is important, and
N if it is not.
1. Ten runners join a race. In
how many possible ways can
they be arranged as first,
second, and third placers?
I
2. If Jun has 12 T-shirts, 6 pairs
of pants, and 3 pairs of shoes,
how many possibilities can
he dress himself up for the day?
N
3. Suppose that in a certain association,
there are 12 elected members of the Board
of Directors. In how many ways can a
president, a vice president, a secretary,
and a treasurer be selected from the
board?
I
4. In how many ways can you
place 9 different books on a
shelf if there is space enough
for only 5 books?
I
5. A dress-shop owner has 8 new
dresses that she wants to display in
the window. If the display window
has 5 mannequins, in how many
ways can she dress them up?
N
A permutation is an arrangement of things in a definite order or
the ordered arrangement of distinguishable objects without
allowing repetitions among the objects.

In general, if n is a positive integer, then n factorial

denoted by n! is the product of all integers less than or
equal to n.
EXAMPLE 1:
Compute:
n P r – the number of
permutations that can be
made with n things taken
r at a time
FORMULA:
The number of
permutations of n things
taken n at a time is given
𝑛𝑃𝑛=𝑛!
by:

The number of
permutations of n things
taken r at a time is given where r < n
