Pre-Colonial Art

it refers to the ethnic arts and Islamic arts because in the


Philippine history these are the periods were there is no
colonization that is why most of the artworks recorded have
unique identity or distinction from our ancestors. In other
words, this is the face of our traditional arts.

Colonial Art

it started in 1565 and ended on 1946.


Spanish colonial Art (333 years)
-This focuses on religion or the spread of Christianity in the Philippines.
American Regime (4 decades)
-most of the artworks are about innovations/ field of arts. This is the time when Filipino
artist start to look for identity. Americans brought in education and values formation.
Japanese Occupation (lasted in the duration of WWII
-The art during this time is not colorful. For less than 5 years of the Japanese
occupation, Filipino artists have shown their talents in writing Tanaka and Haiku.
Post-Colonial Art

It is through art that we can communicate to the world our inner feelings and our
creativity that only exists within our mind. Any form of art can change our lives,
any form of art can influence us, and any form of art can add spices or add
colors the way we live in the world.
Various art forms in the Philippines

1. Visual Arts – is a form of art that uses any medium like


coloring material such as crayons, paint or camera to represent
the artist’s idea, emotion and imagination. Its purpose is to
entice us to the beauty of the art produced by the artist.
Types of Visual Art

1. Drawing

- is creating a picture with variety of tools, in most cases pencils, crayons, pens,
charcoals or markers. Artists draw on different types of surfaces, like paper or
canvas. The first drawings were discovered in caves that date back about
30,000 years.

b. Painting

- it is said to be one of the oldest forms of visual art. Painters express their ideas through
a mixture of colors and different brush strokes.

c. Sculpture

-are three-dimensional pieces of art that are created by shaping various kinds of material.
Among the most popular are stone, steel, plastic, ceramics and wood. Sculpture is often
referred to as plastic arts.

“beauty” (kallos) and “to write” (graphein). It implies a sure knowledge of the correct

2. Applied Arts

- is a form of art that can be defined as art that has practical application as well as
Functionality. Product of our imagination that can help us in our daily lives, they are not
purely display but they are functional.

- is the art of practice of designing and constructing buildings.

b. Fashion Design
- is the art of designing apparel that are aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.
Fashion design involves working with different types of fabrics and patterns which are then
designed to garments.
c. Pottery

- it is one of the oldest and the most widespread of the decorative arts where objects
made are commonly useful ones, such as vessels for holding liquids or plates or bowls
from which food can be served.

- the most entertaining form of art. Form of creative that are performed in front of the

- is the art form of language, and words are its tools.

We can say that the different art forms that can be found in the Philippines
starting with our ancestors to the present time. From north to south, from East to
West, from the deepest part of our oceans, and from the highest part of our
mountains these art forms exist and will always be.
Various Contemporary Art Forms in the Philippines

Contemporary art forms that we have today can be describe as thinking outside the
box. Thinking differently, being creative on producing something that is not usual or
boring. It is coming up with something unique and interesting.
Various Characteristics of Contemporary Art Forms

1.It is conceptual, innovative, expressive and experimental.


2.it allows the viewers to participate in the experience and is urged to validate his/her
beliefs or feelings.
3.it evokes more intense emotions from its spectator.
Integrative Arts applied to Contemporary Art
In contemporary art, not only movements can be integrated into an artwork. Even
seemingly different art categories can be melded together to produce an integrated or
combined art. This “crossbreeding” in the contemporary scene has resulted in a hybrid
art called Integrative Art. These artforms are interactive and multi-disciplinary in
nature, that is, consisting of ideas and practices from the different branches of
learning---the outcome, being the unity of separate areas of learning.

Example: The Legends and the Classics

This is a great presentation of three great Filipino artists coming from three different
disciplines- dance, music and song performing under one roof at the Cultural Center of
the Philippines (CCP) in Manila. They combine their talents to produce a rare
performance.

INTEGRATIVE ART AND CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS NOW INCLUDE THE
FOLLOWING:
1.Choreography
- it is an art form that involves the art of dancing that its purpose is to create a story, a story
that tackle a way of living in a society, a story that tells about a specific social issue.
Contemporary choreography is mostly seen in the production of street dancing in various
festivals.

2. Musical Instruments

- integration of art is seen through the intricate designs of musical instruments representing visual
arts. Musical instrument combined with another instrument is an example of integration.

3. Literary and Musical Composition

- literary works are written works meant to be read while musical compositions on the other hand
are not written but notated. Through the integration of literary pieces and musical composition,
songs in contemporary era has become stronger especially when it comes to the message.

4. Visual Designs and Applied Arts Combined

- it is a composition on lay out of any art elements. Its purpose is not only to amuse the
audience but also to let them enjoy its function as a product of art.

performance.
