Theoretical Framework and Conceptual Framework

The theoretical framework introduces and describes the theory which explains why the research problem exists. It consists of concepts and theories used for a particular study. Developing a theoretical framework involves examining the research problem and title, brainstorming key variables, reviewing literature, listing constructs and variables, and reviewing social science theories. The framework positions the study within broader contexts and makes theoretical assumptions explicit. A conceptual framework visually represents the expected relationship between cause and effect by illustrating the relationship between variables to draw conclusions.

Theoretical Framework

 The theoretical framework is the structure that can hold or support a theory of a
research study. The theoretical framework introduces and describes the theory which
explains why the research problem under study exists.
 Consists of concepts, together with their definitions, and existing theory/theories that
are used for your particular study.
 The theoretical framework is not something that is found readily available in the
literature.
Strategies for Developing the
Theoretical Framework
Developing the Framework.*
 Examine your thesis title and research problem.
 Brainstorm on what you consider to be the key variables in your research.
 Review related literature
 List the constructs and variables
 Review the key social science theories
 Discuss the assumptions or propositions

 A theoretical framework is used to limit the scope of the relevant data.

 A complete theoretical framework will likely not emerge until after you have completed a thorough review
of the literature.
In writing this part of your research
paper, keep in mind the following:
 Clearly describe the framework, concepts, models, or specific theories that
underpin your study.
 Position your theoretical framework within a broader context of related
frameworks, concepts, models, or theories.
 The present tense is used when writing about theory.
 You should make your theoretical assumptions as explicit as possible
 Don’t just take what the theory says as a given!
What is a conceptual framework?

 Is a visual representation in research that helps to illustrate the expected

relationship between cause and effect.
 Illustrates the expected relationship between your variables. It defines the
relevant objectives for your research process and maps out how they come
together to draw coherent conclusions.
