Process
Writing is thinking and good
thinking for all kinds of writers
requires a systematic way of
expressing ideas and feelings.
• Writing demands an active kind of
thinking where we have to analyze,
synthesize, and criticize various
kinds of knowledge. (Gustavi, 2008)

Stage 1:
PRE-WRITING
STAGE
PRE-WRITING STAGE
•Planning is the term used by others to
identify this initial step in technical
writing.
PRE-WRITING STAGE

Things to consider in planning:


Purpose
• enables you to determine the right
ideas or knowledge to include in your
paper
Subject Matter or Topic
• called as Ideation or Inventive Stage
•which ideas are relevant to your topic
Audience or Reader
• You Attitude or the Reader-Oriented style of
writing
• audience analysis
• The effectiveness or success of your report
depends on how it appeals to your reader.

Types of Audience or Readers:
a) Primary audience– makers of decision
b) Secondary audience– implementers of decisions and
givers of recommendations
c) Immediate audience– transmitters of decisions through
the different users
d) Nominal audience– names mentioned in the report but
have no significant participation in the production of the
report
Types of Audience or Readers:
a) Experts– these are the people who know the
theory & the product inside and out.
b) Executives– these are the people who make
business, economic, administrative, legal,
governmental, political decisions on the stuff that
the experts & technicians work with.
Types of Audience or Readers:
c) Technicians– these are the people who build,
operate, maintain, & repair the stuff that the experts
design and theorize about.
d) Nonspecialists– have the least technical
knowledge of all; they want to use the new product
to accomplish their task.

Stage 2: DRAFTING OR
WRITING
•Some consider this as the stage
of packaging or formatting
data.

forming clear and correct sentences
to express ideas
•Should avoid the “orphan line”

appear on the paper
-- avoid wall-to-wall paragraphs
•Techniques in breaking long paragraphs:
a. Use the technique of chunking to set
the organizational patterns of your
work.
b. Use a certain technique in arranging
the components of your report.
c. Make your report accessible to the reader.
d. Present data in various forms such as
giving them a vertical, horizontal, or
columnar positioning of structures in the
report.
e. Express your thoughts in a conversational
way.
