ABOUT CULTURE
According to E.B TAYLOR,
culture is a “complex whole;”
which encompasses beliefs,
practices, values, attitudes,
laws, norms, artifacts,
symbols, knowledge, and
everything that a person
learns and share as a member
of a society.
CULTURAL RELATIVISM
Refers to not judging a culture to our own
standards of what is right or wrong,
strange or normal. Instead, we should try
to understand cultural practices of other
groups in its own cultural context.
ETHNOCENTRISM
The word ethno comes from the Greeks and A term coined by William Graham Sumner.
it refers to a people, nation, or cultural It is the belief that your native culture is the
most natural or superior way of
grouping. Centric, on the other hand, comes understanding the world.
from Latin and refers to the “center”.

Is a belief that one’s own culture is better


than others. They tend to compare, evaluate,
and even judge other people’s way based on
the values and standards set in one’s own
culture.
FUNCTIONS OF
ETHNOCENTRISM
1. Encourage the solidarity of a
group.
2. Hinders the understanding or
the cooperation between the
group.
3. Conflict, of course often
leads to social change.

XENOCENTRISM
Refers to a preference for the foreign, in
this sense; it is the exact opposite of
ethnocentrism. It is characterized by a
strong belief that one’s own product,
styles or ideas are inferior to which
originate elsewhere. For xenocentrism
individuals, the exotic has a special
charm which the familiar can never
achieve.
Xenophobia
The fear of what is perceived as
foreign or strange. Xenophobia can be
seen in the relationship and
perceptions of an in group toward an
out group. It may include fear of
losing identity, suspicion of the other
group’s activities, aggression, and the
desire to eliminate the presence of the
other group to secure a presumed
purity.

components. The tangibles ones
are those that produced and
created based on specific and
practical purposes and values.
