ENVIRONMENTAL
DEGRADATION
AB ST RAC T

Environmental degradation is the disintegration

of the earth or deterioration of the
environment through the consumption of
assets, for example, air, water and soil; the
destruction of environments and the
eradication of wildlife. It is characterized as
any change or aggravation to nature’s turf seen
to be pernicious or undesirable.
Ecological effect or degradation is created by
the consolidation of an effectively substantial
and expanding human populace, constantly
expanding monetary development or per capita
fortune and the application of asset exhausting
and polluting technology.

“ Saving our planet, lifting people out of poverty,

advancing economic growth… these are one and
the same fight. We must connect the dots
between climate change, water scarcity, energy
shortages, global health, food security and
women’s empowerment. Solutions to one
problem must be solutions for all. ”
TYPES O F
ENVIRONMENTAL
DEGRADATION

i) Land and soil degradation : Degradation

of soil quality from poor farming practices,
excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides,
leakage from landfills etc.

ii) Water degradation : Pollution of water

from trash dumped in oceans, illegal
dumping, disposal of large amounts of
industrial waste into nearby rivers or
lakes etc.

iii)Atmospheric degradation : This includes

air degradation, particle pollution and the
depletion of the ozone layer.

iv)Several other kinds of pollution : Apart

from land, water and atmospheric
degradation, many other kinds of pollution
such as noise
pollution, light pollution that are
part of environmental degradation.
C AU S E S O F ENVIRONMENMTAL
DEGRADATION
Some environmental life species require
substantial areas to help provide food, living
space, and other different assets. These
creatures are called area specific.
At the point when the biome is divided, the vast
patches of living space don’t exist anymore. It
becomes more troublesome for the wildlife to
get the assets they need in order to survive. The
environment goes on, even though the animals
and plant life are not there to help sustain it
properly.

1. Land Disturbance :
A more basic cause of environmental degradation
is land damage. Numerous weedy plant species,
for example, garlic & mustard, are both foreign
and obtrusive.
A rupture in the environmental surroundings
provides for them a chance to start growing and
spreading. These plants can assume control over
nature, eliminating the local greenery.
The result is a territory with a solitary
predominant plant which doesn’t give
satisfactory food assets to all the environmental
life. Thus the
whole environment can be destroyed because of
these invasive species.

2. Pollution :
Pollution, in whatever form, whether it is air,
water, land or noise is harmful to the
environment. Air pollution pollutes the air that we
breathe, which causes health issues.
Water pollution degrades the quality of water that
we use for drinking purposes. Land
pollution results in the degradation of the earth’s
surface as a result of h u m a n activities.
Noise pollution can cause irreparable damage to
our ears when exposed to continuous large sounds
like honking of vehicles on a busy road or
machines producing large noise in a factory or a
mill.

3. Overpopulation :
Rapid population growth puts strain on natural
resources, which results in the degradation of our
environment. Mortality rate has gone down due to
better medical facilities, which has resulted in an
increased lifespan.
More population simply means more demand for
food, clothes and shelter. You need more space to
grow food and provide homes to millions of people.
4. Landfills :
Landfills pollute the environment and destroy the
beauty of the city. Landfills come within the city
due to the large amount of waste that gets
generated by households, industries, factories
and hospitals.
Landfills pose a great risk to the health of the
environment and the people who live there.
Landfills produce a foul smell when burned and
cause substantial environmental degradation.

5. Deforestation :
Deforestation is the cutting down of trees to make
way for more homes and industries. Rapid
growth in population and urban sprawl are two of
the major causes of deforestation.

Apart from that, the use of forest land for

agriculture, animal grazing, harvest for fuelwood
and logging are some of the other causes of
deforestation. Deforestation contributes to global
warming as decreased forest size puts carbon
back into the environment.
IMPACT OF HUMAN
INTERFERENCE ON EARTH
1. Pollution :

Pollution is everywhere. From the trash thrown

out on the freeway, to the millions of metric tons of
pollution pumped into the atmosphere every year-
it's obvious, pollution and waste are inescapable.
Pollution is so bad that to date, 2.4 billion people
do not have access to clean water sources.
Humanity is continuously polluting indispensable
resources like air, water, and soil which requires
millions of years to replenish.
Air is arguably the most polluted with India
producing 147 million metric tons of air pollution
each year alone.

2. Global Warming :

Global warming is arguably the greatest cause of

impact on the environment. The largest of causes
emanating through CO ₂ levels from respiration to
more detrimental causes like burning fossil fuels
and deforestation.
At any rate, h u m a n s are consistently increasing
CO ₂ levels globally- every year. The highest level of
CO ₂ in recorded history before 1950 was about 300
parts per million. However, current measurements
of CO ₂ levels have exceeded above 400 PPM,
abolishing every record dating back 400,000 years.
The increase of CO ₂ emissions has contributed to
the planet's average temperature increasing
almost a whole degree.

3. Genetic Modification :
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been
a major contributor to the survival and prosperity
of h u m a n s. G M O' s are selected bred crops or crops
that have had DNA directly implanted into it in
order to give an advantage to the crop, whether
that be to sustain colder temperatures, require
less water, or yield more product.
But GM O' s are not always intentional. For years
h u man s have used glyphosate, a herbicide
designed to eliminate weeds - the biggest threat to
any plant. However, just as h u m an s have a
learning immune system, certain weeds have
developed a resistance to 22 of 25 known
herbicides, with 249 species of weeds completely
immune according to the latest scientific report.
"Super weeds" threaten farming lands by chocking
outcrops. One of the only solutions is to till the
land, turning over the soil to kill the weeds and
give an early advantage to the planted crops.
4. Ocean acidification :

The acid reduces the pH levels in the water,

essentially changing the Ocean acidity by 30% in
the last 200 years according to analysis - a level
that the ocean has not been at in over 20 million
years.
The acidity depletes the calcium concentrations,
making it difficult for crustaceans to build their
shell, leaving them vulnerable without their
armor. Between the global temperature rise of one
degree and the ocean acidification, scientists say
a quarter of all coral reefs are considered damaged
beyond repair, with two-thirds under serious
threat. The death of coral reefs is a serious
concern.
Coral reefs are home to 25% of aquatic life, many
of which are responsible for the natural filtration
of the ocean and production of necessary nutrients
that are vital for life under the sea. However,
acidification is not the only watery threat as there
are other h u m a n activities causing severe
changes. Things like plastic pollution and
overfishing are wreaking havoc on our oceans.

5. Deforestation :
With an exponential expansion in h u m a n beings,
more food, materials, and shelter are being
manufactured at stupendous rates, mostly
stemming from forestry.
Forests are cleared to make way for new h u m a n s,
which in turn, makes more h u m a n s, you can see
the problem. According to international data, an
estimated 18 million acres of trees are clear-cut
each year to make way for new development and
wood products- that is just under half of all the
trees on the planet since the industrial
revolution began.
With trees being one of the largest producers of
oxygen, clearly that is not a good thing for
human s- and especially not for the animals that
call the forest home.
With millions of different species that live in
forests, deforestation is a major threat to their
survival and a big conservation issue. It also
increases greenhouse gases within the atmosphere
which leads to further global warming. S u c h
h u m an activities need to stop if we wish to
survive. Even more so, recent studies have
attributed deforestation to the increase of wildfires
in areas like Amazon. Wildfires are equally
destructed even more so, displacing both people
and entire species.
MEDITATION
INTRODUCTION :
There are so many people today who have
discovered the power of meditation and the
changes that it can have on their lives. Meditation
can help individuals with stress and anxiety, it
can help them find a sense of spirituality and
some studies have even found that it can help with
a number of health issues ranging from
depression to cancer.
There is no end to the outward changes you will
likely see when you start practicing mindful
meditation. Chan ces are you will be happier, more
balanced and may attract more positive people into
your life.
However, what is most impressive about
meditation, especially regular meditative
practices is the internal changes that it can bring.
This is when you will see the real change in your
life and the way that you view yourself.

BENEFITS :
 Distance yourself from your thoughts and
feelings, when they might otherwise overwhelm
and consume you.
 Create space to live in the present and relax,
as opposed to worrying over future or past
problems.
 Build a deeper connection with yourself and
your values, improving self-esteem and
decision making.
 Drift to sleep more easily at night.
 Set yourself up with more vibrancy and
resilience for the day.
 Meditation can simply be focusing on your
breath or physical sensations. These
things ground u s, bring u s to the here and now,
and away from overthinking (the cause of a lot of
mental distress).
 Meditation can also bring that awareness and
focus back on the mind itself.

When you do this with the same level of calm and

control, you can become m u c h more self-aware,
experiencing negative thoughts and feelings m u c h
less acutely and often. When you don’t over engage
with thoughts and feelings, which can otherwise
be a default inclination, you don’t feed and
perpetuate them.
This type of mindful fortitude and resilience can
teach you to withstand pain, emotional upheaval,
and all manner of other negative stressors. The
upshot of this is a far greater lease of life, with less
turmoil, more balance, and more joy.
INTROSPECTION
INTRODUCTION :

Introspection is a mechanism to scrutinize your

deep feelings by exploring yourself which helps
you to connect dots that were not connected
previously, giving meaning to your life.
Introspection helps you to find solutions to your
problems and also help you in making risky
decisions. Creating a positive environment that is
rich in creativity will eventually turn you into a
noble person. This can be achieved through
introspection.

Self-realization, exploration, and imagination are

necessary for a person to reach great heights.
Highly successful people, entrepreneurs, and
various other people introspect themselves daily
to lead a peaceful life. The reason behind such
people’s success is also due to consistent
introspection.

Connecting your own mental and emotional state

for a meaningful life is the key to peace, creativity,
and innovation. Start asking questions to yourself,
about how you want your life to be, and tell the
answers to yourself, and finally introspect it.
BENEFITS :
1. Inner-Guided decisions :
Being introspective allows you to maintain close
contact with your Inner Guidance. Your
Guidance is what helps you distinguish right
from wrong.
When you focus on looking inwards, you get the
opportunity to weigh your options.
Inner-Guided decisions allow you to sleep better at
night.
Taking this approach helps you to be true to
others, regardless of the outcome.

2. Character building :
Looking inwards forces you to confront the
person you are. What makes you tick? What do
you believe in? Taking an honest look at your
character brings you self-knowledge, can help
build your self-esteem, and enables you to make
changes if you want to.
Have you done or said things that offend
others? Put yourself in their shoes and think
about how you’d feel.
Look back at your experiences. Which outcome
has left you feeling the most satisfied?
3. Fair thinking :
Fair thinking is tied in with the conscience. Bu t
introspection allows you to lock out the noise
around you. It's very easy to sway your thoughts
based on what is presented to you on the
outside. But listen to yourself first!
It's easy to want to give in to a particular way of
thinking based on influence. Your close friends
and even family encourage you to see things
their way. But what about your way?

4. Defined happiness :
By taking a look at what you're made up of inside,
you can actually define happiness. What are the
things that you enjoy doing? How do you
measure relationships with others? Answering
questions like these can lead to true happiness,
defined just for you.

5. Confrontation of fear :
It's easy to live in the pretense of fearlessness. But
the truth is that every person has at least one fear.
What's yours? The best way to determine your
fears is through introspection. Once you own your
fears, you can move towards managing the
feelings they bring.
