QUESTIONS

In June 2000 the London Millennium Bridge opened to public but closed
shortly afterwards for repair. The bridge was swaying as people walked
across it. Before bridges was built, computer models are produced and
the models are tested. Explain why computer models are used before
building a bridge.

Answer: Bridges have to be able to survive adverse weather conditions,

and the model can be used to test what happens under very extreme
weather conditions, such as storms and hurricanes, without endangering
anyone. Otherwise, the bridge would have to be destroyed by extreme
weather conditions.
QUESTIONS
High street banks now offer customers access to internet banking when they are in the
physical bank. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages to the bank of using internet
banking in this way.

Advantages:

• Branches can stay open longer and offer other services.

• Fewer bank tellers so more profitable for the bank.

• As the service is quicker/more services likely to remain.

Disadvantages:

• Initial cost of hardware/software is expensive

• Need to retrain staff which can be expensive

• System maintenance costs will be expensive as more inexperienced people are using the
system.

Expert system: a computerized system that attempts to reproduce the
decision-making process of an expert human

6.8
Expert systems are made up of five parts:
• The user interface: the on-screen form through which the user
interact with the expert system.
• Knowledge base: a database of related information about a

EXPERT •
particular subject.
Rules base: a set of rules that will be used to produce an output
or decision by the expert system.

SYSTEMS
• Inference engine: the program that can apply the rules to the
data in order to get sensible judgments.
• Explanation system: provides an explanation of the reasoning
processes used to arrive at a particular decision.
Expert system uses these five functional parts together in order to
calculate solutions for different scenarios. For example:
• Medical diagnosis: The system gives decision support in the

form of an accurate diagnosis for the symptoms input.
Mineral prospecting: It is when different sites are tested for the
probability of minerals, such as ore, being present at a site

• Car engine fault diagnosis: Symbols on a car’s dashboards
which light up when a sensor detects a problem with a
component such as in the engine or brakes are all part of the

Chess games: A chess player can play a game against the
computer (the expert system) which can help players train
without the need of another person.
• Financial planning: Information about financial situations and
personal circumstances is entered via the user interface, and

6.8 based on each user’s answers, the expert system can suggest a
financial plan and give advice on how best they can organize
their investments, manage their debts, or pay less taxes.

EXPERT
• Route scheduling for delivery vehicles: The system would

into consideration the areas of delivery.
• Plant and animal identification: These systems can be used by
