Applied Functional Science Afs

Applied Functional Science (AFS) is a combination of physical science, biological science, and behavioral science. It uses a system called SFT Syntax to describe movements in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes, driven by physical and anatomical factors. The concept of "tweakology" involves tweaking elements of movement like drivers, positions, or angles to create different demands on the body. AFS also uses a 3D movement analysis system called 3DMAPS to analyze 66 whole body motions. It examines mobility through lunging exercises and stability through balance and reach exercises. A key concept is "transformational zones," which are periods of a movement where the body decelerates from a load into an acceleration to

Applied Functional Science

(AFS)
By: Rick Schuster
What is AFS?

● A combination of 3 sciences.1
○ Physical science (mass, momentum,
gravity, GRF)
○ Biological science (musculoskeletal,
neurological, cardiopulmonary, etc.)
○ Behavioral science (power of the
mind and spirit, encouragement,
empowerment, engagement)
Nomenclature

● SFT Syntax (XXX)

○ Sagittal plane: Can be either Left or Right
(LXX, RXX)
○ Frontal plane: Can be either Narrow or
Wide (XNX, XWX)
○ Transverse plane: Can be either Internal or
External rotation (XXI, XXE)
● Drivers
○ Physical drivers (mass, momentum, GRF,
etc.)
○ Anatomical drivers (feet, hands, eyes,
pelvis, knees, nose)
Tweakology

● Involves tweaking or changing elements of

a movement to facilitate a desired
reaction.2
● This can include tweaking the driver,
environment, position, angulation,
verticality, etc.
● Tweaking “In” or “Out” an element may
impose more demand on a body segment,
challenge more balance, as well as many
other differences that can be seen with
tweakology.
3DMAPS
● 3-Dimensional Movement Analysis and
Performance System (3DMAPS)3
● This incorporates whole body movement
combining motion and stability
● 66 vital motions that all show up during
normal ADLs/IADLs
○ Start with lunging in sagittal plane
(anterior/posterior)
○ Lunge in frontal plane (SS lateral, OS
lateral)
○ Lunge in transverse plane (SS rotational,
OS rotational)
● Start with lunging (looking at mobility) to
balance reaches (looking at stability)
Transformational Zones
● A zone of movement that begins with the
deceleration of a motion (load) and
continues until acceleration of the last
motion (explode)
● Critical mass of all human movement
● Example with gait
○ TZ1 is when during heel strike when the
calcaneus everts and the foot pronates to
become flexible for shock absorption (load)
○ TZ2 is during toe off when the calcaneus
inverts and the foot supinates to become a
rigid lever for propulsion (explode)
