Learning Outcomes

In this chapter, you are expected to demonstrate mastery
on linguistics by:
• tracing its macro and micro subfields;
• conducting research using the approaches and
linguistics distinctions; and
• designing a learning plan using the theories of
linguistics.
2 Chapter 2: Overview on the Study of Linguistics: Branches, Theories and
Approaches
EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Explore!

TASK : Share your thoughts with the class on some

effective ways how we can acquire language.
You may base your sharing on your experiences.
List down the key points below:

EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

behaviorism

BF Skinner believed
that for language learning
to occur, imitation, drills
and constant practice are
very important.
Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models
EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!
Nativism/innatism

Noam Chomsky
hypothesized that humans must be
born with Language Acquisition
Device (LAD) in their brain, which
is why children can acquire
language quickly..
Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models
EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

Interactionism (Lev Vygotsky)

The interactionists believe that
there must be a good interplay between
the biological and environmental
factors for language acquisition to
occur.

EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

Monitor model (Stephen Krashen)

This model supports the

principle that acquiring a language
has biological and social
components, also known as the
“Input hypothesis”, which is
composed of five hypotheses or
components expounding the
process Lesson
of language acquisition.
2: Linguistics Theories and Models
EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

The Acquisition-learning hypothesis

Krashen argued that acquiring

a language is different from learning
it. Acquisition and learning are
different. The acquisition is an
unconscious process while learning
is a conscious process.
Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models
EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

Natural order hypothesis

Krashen claimed a
natural or predictable order by
which all learners acquire
language.

Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models

EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!
The monitor hypothesis

Krashen argued that while

our acquired competence is
responsible for our language
production such as our utterance,
the result of learning functions as a
monitor, editing or self-correcting
or language output..
Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models
EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

The input hypothesis

Krashen explains that

language skills cannot be
taught directly, because they
should be acquired through an
emergent process, naturally
occurring on their own.
Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models
EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

The AFFECTIVE-FILTER hypothesis

Affective variables
including anxiety, self-confidence,
motivation, and stress play a
crucial roles in taking in the
inputs.

EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

Communicative competence model (Dell Hymes)

When children acquire a language, they do not

only acquire grammatical knowledge of sentences but
also use that knowledge appropriately.
4 components of Language Competence Model:
1. Grammatical
2. Sociolinguistics
3. Discourse
4. Strategic competence
Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models
EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

sociolinguistic COMPETENCE

It is concerned with the

appropriateness of the utterances.

Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models

EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

discourse

It is concerned with the

learners’ mastery of producing
coherent and cohesive language
outputs in the modes of listening,
speaking, reading, and writing.

Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models

EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Engage!

Strategic competence

It refers to the learner’s ability to

solve problems during
communication.

Lesson 2: Linguistics Theories and Models

EL 101 (Introduction to Linguistics )

Let’s Execute!

Task 1: B. Design a learning plan integrating linguistic

theories and models. Use the format below.

I. Learning Objectives
II. Learning Content
III. Learning Experiences
IV. Assessment of Learning
