Polynomials

This document defines polynomials and discusses their characteristics. It begins by defining a polynomial as an expression consisting of variables and coefficients. Polynomials are then classified based on the number of terms: monomial (one term), binomial (two terms), trinomial (three terms), and polynomials with four or more terms. The document also discusses the degree of a polynomial, which is defined as the highest exponent of any variable in the polynomial. Several examples of polynomials of different degrees are provided, including constant, linear, quadratic, cubic, and quartic polynomials.

POLYNOMIALS

OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session, the learners should be able to:

1. Identify what is polynomials.

2. Differentiate the types and the degree of polynomials.
WHAT IS
POLYNOMIALS
WHAT IS
POLYNOMIALS

In mathematics, a polynomial is an expression consisting of

variables and coefficient. Polynomials are sums of these
"variables and exponents" expressions.

Example : x2 – 3x + 6, which is a quadratic polynomial.

POLYNOMIALS

Degree - polynomial's degree is the highest or the greatest power of a

variable in a polynomial equation.
Variable - is a letter that represents the unknown value in an expression.

Constant - is the term of degree 0; it is the term in which the variable

does not appear.
Coefficient - is the number that is being multiplied by a variable.
Operator – this is to identify if the number or its value is negative or
positive.

The characteristics of polynomials is defined by the number of terms. A term is a number,
a variable, or a product of a number and one or more variables with exponents.

Degree – the degree of polynomial is the highest degree of its
term, when the polynomial is expressed in standard form. The
degree of a term is the sum of the exponents of the variables that
appear in it.
For example: 6x4+2x3+3 is a polynomial. Here 6x4, 2x3,3 are the
terms where 6x4 is a leading term and 3 is a constant term. The
degree of the polynomial is 4.
