Verbal
Communication
• Refers to spoken words or the ability to deliver messages orally. it is from
the latin word verbum which refers to word. this is a face to face interaction
or can be a mediated form of communication as in the case of video
conferencing or teleconferencing. in verbal communication, listening takes
a crucial role. listening is important in interpersonal relationships,
especially in creating or maintaining romantic or business relationship.
according to international reading association, listening is receiving and
constructing meaning from the verbal and non-verbal messages that people
create. Public speeches also fall under verbal communication.
Verbal Communication
• Communication plays an important role in everyday living. in the field of education,
the role of verbal communication among teachers and learners is very evident.
through verbal communication, the teacher educates his/her students important lessons
ranging from moral values to information superhighways that are necessary for the
learners to be equipped with necessary knowledge that they need to learn. the
learner, on the other hand, gives feedback to the mentor by communicating his/her
thoughts during the class discussion. On the other hand, for professional individuals,
communication is a big factor in getting promotion or being hired in a company. the
ability to express one’s self orally is an advantage and a must in dealing with co-
workers, subordinates, immediate supervisor, the boss and the company’s clients.
• verbal communication or oral communication can be categorized as formal or
informal communication.
Formal Verbal Communication

• Formal communication methods are approved ways to share information


that is orderly and it follows set of rules, procedures or standards. Formal
communications are very common in educational workplaces and business
settings. Formal communications are mostly written, but can be oral. Formal
communications are not personal communications.
• Formal communication occurs in a formal and official style. Usually,
professional settings, corporate meetings, conference undergoes in formal
pattern. In formal communication, use of slang and foul language is avoided
and correct pronunciation is required. authority lines are needed to be
followed in formal communication.
INFORMAL VERBAL COMMUNICATION

• Informal communication is done using channels that are in contrast with formal
communication channels. it is in a form of casual talk. It is established for
societal affiliations of members in an organization and face-to-face discussions.
• It happens among friends and family. In informal communication use of
slang words, foul language is not restricted usually. Informal communication is
done orally and using gestures. Informal communication, unlike formal
communication, doesn’t follow authority lines. in an organization, it helps in
finding out staff grievances as people express more when talking
informally. Informal communication helps in building relationships.
TYPES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION

There are several types of verbal communication such as:

• Face to face
• Talking to another person with facial expressions, gestures and tone of voice is an
effective means to communicate and create meaning. Face-to-face communication
boosts relationship and creativity through the proficiency to share ideas freely.
• Communication is more than just words in a face to face meeting; it helps detect
body language, feelings, tone, and reactions, which can often be misinterpreted
through digital means.
 
TELEPHONE CONVERSATION

• When there is important news that needs to be passed


immediately, telephone is the best means. You can communicate
with somebody on the phone either thru landline or mobile phone.
• A telephonic conversation gives the benefit of connecting
such information directly to the ears of the intended recipient
despite of being far from the person. It also enables you to answer
any questions that might arise immediately and helps you convey a
deeper sense of urgency.
VIDEO-
CHAT
• The emergence of the internet has allowed people to get in touch verbally with
anyone anytime and everywhere. A video chat is a good tool of communication through a
visual medium. it is often much more clear than communication only through text or audio.
• Using video chat as a corporate communications tool helps reduce costs by allowing
telecommuting for employees, which helps cut down on in-office costs. scheduling and
productivity can also be improved, because meetings can happen at the click of a button
• Video chatting also enables regular and clear communication between team members,
even if they're not located in the same building or even in the same country.
LECTURE TYPE

• In the academe, this is a basic example on how effective verbal


communication can be used. By means of lecturing, professors can
transfer knowledge to students by means of discussions.
• Students may also confirm or ask questions if there are topics that
are not clear to them.
 
VOICE MAIL

• In case, the person you are calling is not available at the


moment, messages can be recorded. This message will be received by
a family member or friend once he or she is already available. Voice
mail methods are far cheaper than the labor necessary to ensure that
all incoming calls are answered by a human being.
