BAMBOO

INTRODUCTIO
N
BAMBOOS is one of the most
sustainable building materials
on the planet and is termed as
vegetable steel with a tensile
strength of 2800per square inch
and also provide earthquake
resistant structures .
FACTS
• Bamboo contains high level of starch which attracts insects ,without
proper treatment ,bamboo has a natural durability of less than 2 years.
• Species like genus “dendrocalamus” and “bambusa” have the best
properties for structural applications.

• In India over 130 species of bamboos are found .It has a wide range of
distribution forming an understorey in several forests types except in
jammu and Kashmir.
Advantages
 Upto 70% of steel in construction can be
replaced by bamboo.
 Itcan be used to construct various structural
elements like columns, beams wall,roof
staircase and its three times cheaper than steel.
 It promotes green architecture .
Disadvantages
• They require preservation.
• Shrinkage: bamboo shrinks
much greater than any type of
timber especially when it looses
water .
• Durability: bamboo should be
sufficiently treated against
insects ,hence requires care.
Uses
 Bamboo form the single most important item of the forests produce used by the
rural communities in asia and the pacific ,from the cradle to the coffin .
 Small scale cottages.
Uses
 Furniture like sofa ,table and wooden ladders.
 The shoots are edible .
 Creating a fire line in traditional forests due to high content
of silica.
 Removing atmospheric carbon :bamboos can capture 17
Metric tons of carbon per hectre per year.
 Soil stabilization ,wind break, urban waste over water treat
Ment and reduction of nitrate contamination.
PROPERTIES OF BAMBOO
 Bamboo has higher compressible properties as
compared to steel ,brick ,wood and concrete ,which is
28000 pounds.
 They are elastic ,enviournment friendly and
biodigredable.
 The fiber is bacteriostatic ,antifungal, antibacterial.
 Further they are also resistant to ultraviolet light and
are highly durable ,stable and tough .
The Working Of Bamboo in
Construction
Splitting
Bending
Shaping
Bamboo Has Nodes, Use
Them!
In construction, using bamboo nodes is very
important. Bamboo columns or beams need to have
a node at both ends (or as close as possible towards
the ends), if not the pressure of a structure on the
joint may crush the bamboo.

Often it isn't possible to find bamboo of the required

length with both end nodes in place. When this
occurs you should insert a wooden cylinder of the
appropriate diameter or a fitting piece of bamboo
with a node.
Splitting
 The cane is spilt in halves and quarters and then driven
apart by a wedge
It can also be split with a knife frame into four or eight
segments.
Bending & Shaping
 Bamboo has the tendeny to bend and keep
its shape.
 Although when heated above 150 degree
celcius ,freshly cut bamboo can be bent and
will keep this shape after drying.
Bending bamboo using warm water
 Step 1
 Fill a tube with luke warm water : place your bamboo pole in tub and allow
them to soak overnight .As with wood ,bamboo requires moisture to bend. The
moisture softens the lining and hemicellulose in the bamboo cells and allows
them to flex .
 Step 2
 Test your bamboo: pull the bamboo out of the water and slowly bend the
bamboo out of the water and slowly bend the bamboo ,attempting it into the
shape you need.If you hear a cracking sound the bamboo needs to be placed in
the water again.
 Step 3
 Once your bamboo has been adequately soaked and is pliable ,remove it from
water and place on a plywood with a design of your choice between the
nails, then allow it to dry 1-3 days.
Joinery Of bamboo
 Green fresh cut bamboo shouldn’t be used. Bamboo has to be completely dry
before using it in construction. During the drying process, the bamboo
diameter is shrinked so when bamboo is using joinery, this will in loose and
weak joints after a few weeks
 Only use mature bamboo of 4-6 years.
 Do NOT use bamboo infected by insects, Bamboo has to be properly cured
with a boron mix immediately after harvesting.
 Use appropriate cuts and joints when building with bamboo.
 Do not use conventional wood needs in bamboo joinery, they will cause the
bamboo to split. Instead use nylon, steel or vegetable cord of the appropriate
diameter.
Joinery of bamboo
These are the most common cuts to
use when making bamboo joints.

one ear / two ear / beveled / flute

mouth / fish mouth
Joining horizontal with vertical elements

. Joint with one or two ears. Is used to

join bamboo rafters, logs or lumber.
2. Flap joint. Is used when there is no lashing wire
available. The flap can be secured with bamboo strips.
3.Fishmouth joint .is named after the way one bamboo piece
“bites”into its counterpart .This traditional joinery technique makes use of the bamboo’s
intrinsic properties by evenly distributing the loads across the full section of bamboo culm.
Case study:
• Bamboos here
preform as a major
support in building
construction and are
cheap compared to
steel .
