If a contractor company working for PDO wishes to use existing Respiratory

Protective Equipment (RPE), for which training is not provided for in the PDO
approved Training Courses, then additional training will need to be provided by the
contractor company. Records of this training will be kept by the contractor company.

HYDROGEN SULPHIDE (H2S)

 Colourless toxic gas with “Rotten egg” odour,

 Denser than air,
 Flammable,
 Corrosive ,
 Low concentrations irritate eyes, nose,
throat and respiratory system (e.g. burning /
tearing of eyes, cough, shortness of breath),
 High concentrations can cause shock,
convulsions, inability to breathe, extremely
rapid unconsciousness, coma and death.
Effects can occur within a few breaths and
possible a single breath.

SULPHUR DIOXIDE (SO2)

 Colourless toxic gas with

pungent odor,
 Denser than air, however
typically buoyant due to
temperature of release,
 Released when fluid
containing H2S is burned,
 Low concentrations –
irritant,
 High concentrations –
respiratory impact.

FACILITY CLASSIFICATION

There are three facility classifications:

FACILITY
CLASSIFICATIONS TRAINING CARDS

SWEET

SOUR

CRITICAL SOUR

YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS THE

FACILITY CLASSIFICATION AND
THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
BEFORE ENTERING THE FACILITY.

FACILITY ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

 Comply with standard PDO entry

requirements such as site safety
induction, Permit To Work, access
authorization form or asset holders
exemption.
 Comply with all requirements as per area
zone (i.e. buddy system for red and yellow
zone).
 Carry Escape RPE according to the facility
classification & zoning.
 Holding a valid H2S & SO2 Awareness
Training Card.

EMERGENCY PLANNING ZONE (EPZ)

 EPZ is a geographical area that surrounds a well,
pipeline, or facility containing H2S that requires
specific emergency response planning / requirements.
 Entry requirement as below:
REQUIREMENTS DESCRIPTIONS

Separation Minimize time spent in this zone

H2S Training Valid H2S awareness training

Detection Carry H2S detector at all time

Communication Working communication

Protection Filter hood

Vehicle available
Evacuation within walking distance. •7

RED AND YELLOW ZONES

 A number of Zones have been established for

Critical Sour and Sour facilities to manage the
risk levels for the facility.
 Red zones are established within Critical Sour
facilities where concentration and pressure of
H2S requires additional precautions.
 Yellow Zones are implemented in both Critical
Sour and Sour facilities where credible release
may result potential fatalities.

IF YOU ARE REQUIRED TO

WORK WITH CRITICAL SOUR
“WORKING & ESCAPE SET” OR
BREAKING COMTAINMENT,
YOU WILL REQUIRE FURTHER
TRAINING (SCBA).
SIMOPS (SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION)
www.pdo.co.om

ZONE
 Simultaneous execution of activities, results in an
increased operational complexity and enhanced
level of risk. Example: Production with
construction activities.
 To enter SimOps zone, you need to comply with
the following:
 Comply with facility entry & EPZ entry
requirement. This includes carrying RPE
according to the facility classification &
zoning.
 SimOps controls established in the SimOps
documents.
 SimOps are managed in accordance with the
facility Matrix of Permitted Operations, as part of
Permit To Work (PTW) control.

SOUR WELL TEST FLARING

Well Test Unit (WTU) burns

well fluids, SO2 & H2S
released to environment.
2 Zones in place to manage
those hazards:

 Total Exclusion Zone (TEZ)

 No entry to Non WTU
Personnel.

 Special Precautions Zone

(SPZ) IF YOU NEED TO
 Comply with EPZ WORK IN THESE
requirement and AREAS, SPECIAL

instantly.
 Ensure you understand all the hazards associated with H 2S
and precautions required for your working area .
 If you smell rotten eggs, immediately move away and
report to a supervisor, even if no alarm has sounded.
 If H2S alarm is activated, stop work, hold your breath,
immediately don escape set & proceed to assembly
point.
 Check wind direction and proceed cross wind and up wind
to safety.
