Energy Engineering Module 1

This document discusses steam generators and coal handling systems. It describes different types of steam generators used in power plants including Loeffler, Benson, and Velox steam generators. It also discusses various methods of fuel feeding including pulverized coal fed using unit or bin systems. Different types of stokers are classified including overfeed, underfeed, chain grate, and travelling grate stokers. The document also outlines the requirements of an effective coal handling plant and describes various coal and ash handling equipment used such as belt conveyors, bucket elevators, and pneumatic conveyors.

Content

 STEAM GENERATORS: Coal and ash handling, Generation of steam using

forced circulation, high and supercritical pressures, LaMount, Benson, Velox,
Loeffer, Schmidt steam generators, Cooling towers and Ponds, Accessories such
as Superheaters, De-superheater, Economizers, Air preheaters.
TYPES OF FUELS

 The important fuels are as follows-

 Solid fuels
 Liquid fuels
 Gaseous fuels
2 Fuel feeding

 The solid fuels are fired into the furnace by the following methods:
 Hand firing.
 Mechanical firing
 Pulverized fuel is fired in combustion chamber by following methods
 Unit system
 Bin or central system
Stokers are classified as follows

Overfeed Underfeed

Conveyor stoker
• Chain Grate stoker Single Retort stoker
• Travelling Grate stoker

Spreader stoker Multi Retort stoker

Over feed stoker
Under feed stoker
Chain grate stoker and Travelling great stoker
Spreader Stoker
Single retort stoker
Multi retort stoker
Requirements of good coal handling plant

 It should need minimum maintenance.

 It should be reliable.
 It should be simple and sound.
 It should require a minimum of operatives.
 It should be able to deliver requisite quantity of coal at destination during peak
periods.
 There should be minimum wear in running of equipment due to abrasive action of
coal particles.
