CA Lesson 1 Projectile Motion

1. The document discusses projectile motion and describes how to determine the trajectory of objects in motion under the influence of gravity. 2. It explains that the horizontal and vertical motions of a projectile are independent, with the horizontal component experiencing no acceleration and the vertical component experiencing a constant downward acceleration due to gravity. 3. Formulas are provided to calculate the time of flight, maximum height, and range of a projectile based on its initial velocity and launch angle.

Where should the hunter aim? Where would you aim? Three
choices arise:
1. Aim above the monkey
2. Aim directly at the monkey
3. Aim below the monkey

Path of a Projectile
• An object shot through the air is called a projectile.
• After a projectile has been given an initial thrust
(ignoring air resistance), it moves through the air under
only the force of gravity.
• Its path through space is called its trajectory.
Independence of Motion in Two Dimensions

• The vertical and horizontal motions of a

projectile are independent.
• When there is no air resistance, the horizontal
motion component experiences no acceleration
and has a constant velocity.
• The vertical motion component of a projectile
changes because it experiences a constant
acceleration due to gravity under these same
conditions.
Angled Launches

• There are three quantities associated with a trajectory.

• Maximum height: the height
of the projectile when the
vertical velocity is zero
• Range (R): the horizontal
distance that the projectile
travels when the initial and
final heights are the same
• Flight time: how much time
the projectile is in the air;
also called hang time
Velocities of projectile
Formula for Projectile Motion

1. Velocity at any time during the projectile

2. Time of flight ( Time taken for complete journey)

3. Maximum Height ( Maximum distance travelled vertically)

4. Horizontal Range ( Maximum distance travelled on ground)

level ground and gives it an initial velocity of
7.8 m/s at an angle of 32° above the ground.
Assume that forces due to air drag on the ball
are insignificant.
a. How long will the ball be in the air? 0.84 s
b. How high will the ball go? 0.87 m
c. What will be its range? 5.57 m
