INTRODUCTION
THE TRIUMVIRATE
Let’s talk about three very important composers who made
their mark on Philippine music and were considered as the
“Triumvirate of Filipino Composers,” a group of major
Filipino composers all active at around the same period.
RECOGNITION
Antonio
BUENAVENTURA
• Born on May 4, 1904 in Baliuag Bulacan.
• Pioneer researcher of Philippine folk and
ethnic music. wrote music that incorporated
indigenous sounds and music. Some examples
of these are “Mindanao Sketches” (1947),
which incorporated Manobo songs, and
“Greetings” (1978).
• Famous for resurrecting the Philippine Army
Band and restoring its prestige as “the only
band in the world that could sound like a
symphony orchestra.”
Lucio
SAN PEDRO
• Born on Fenruary 11, 1913, in Rizal.
• He graduated from the UP College of Music
with a double degree in Composition and
Conducting. He then pursued further studies at
the Juilliard School of Music in 1947.
• He wrote “Suite Pastorale,” a symphonic
work, while in UP which ended up as the song
“Sa Ugoy ng Duyan,” a lullaby and an ode to
a mother’s love.
• Because of his unique way of showing
nationalism through music, he was conferred
the title of National Artist in 1991.

Ryan
CAYABYAB
• Born on May 4, 1954 in Manila City.
• Finished Business Administration in UP
Diliman, and worked while studying to
support his education. Later earned his degree
in music, majoring in Theory from the UP
Conservatory of Music,
• A pianist for the Development Bank of the
Philippines Choral Ensemble under the
leadership of Salvador Laurel.
• Also known as “Maestro Ryan” and “Mr. C,”
is a very versatile musician, composer, and
arranger.
Levi
CELERIO
• Born on April 30, 1910, in Tondo, Manila.
• He was a prolific composer and lyricist and
had about 4,000 songs to his credit. He has
conferred the title of National Artist in 1997.
• He was also known for being able to play
music using leaves and was recognized by the
Guinness Book of World Records for it.
• Celerio wrote lyrics for many songs,
conveying the beauty of life and nationalistic
ideals like his famous song “Saan Ka Man
Naroroon?”.
