ACCELERATION

Acceleration ()
 Acceleration is the rate at which an
object’s velocity changes.
• Velocity changes when an object’s speed
and direction changes.
• Acceleration of an object also changes if its
speed or its direction changes.
Acceleration ()
 When an object is increasing in velocity
over time it is said to be accelerating.
(positive acceleration)
 When an object is decreasing in velocity
over time it is said to be decelerating.
(negative acceleration)
Acceleration ()
 If an object is moving at constant
velocity it is said to be moving with
zero acceleration.
Acceleration ()
 You can calculate the average acceleration
of an object by using the following
equation.

=
Acceleration ()
 The unit for velocity is meter per second (m/s)
 The unit for time is second (s)
 Therefore, the unit for acceleration is
=

“meters per second-squared”

Acceleration ()
 Acceleration is recorded in units such as meters per
second squared (m/s2).
Acceleration of a car

 Based on this data, you can see that the acceleration of the car at
any time is 5m/s/s or 5 m/s2. Every second, the velocity of the car
increases by 5 m/s.
Let’s try this out!
𝑣𝑖
1) 𝑣A skater increases the velocity from 2 m/s to
𝑓 𝑡
10 m/s in 3 seconds. What is the skater’s
acceleration?
F: =
S: = =
A: = 2.67 m/s/s or 2.67 m/s2
Let’s try this out!
𝑎
2) A car accelerate
𝑣𝑖
at rate of 3 m/s². If its original
speed is 8 m/s, how many seconds will it take the
car to reach a final speed of 25 m/s?
𝑣𝑓
F: =
S: t = = 𝑣 𝑓 − 𝑣𝑖

A: t = 5.67 s ⃗𝒂 ∆t
Let’s try this out!
3) A ball climbs up the hill with an initial
velocity of 4 m/s and rolls down the hill at
6 m/s in 5 seconds. Determine the
following:
𝑣 −𝑣
a. Change in Velocity 𝑓 𝑖

b. Acceleration ⃗𝒂 ∆t
Let’s try this out!
a. Change in Velocity
v = 6 m/s – 4 m/s
𝑣 𝑓 − 𝑣𝑖
v = 2 m/s
⃗𝒂 ∆t
b. Acceleration
=
= 0.4 m/s/s or 0.4 m/s²

Write your complete solution in your notebook.

1) A helicopter’s speed which was traveling

Northward increases from 25 m/s to 60 m/s in
5 seconds. What is the acceleration of this
helicopter?
2) While traveling eastward a driver slows
from 24 m/s to 15 m/s in 12 seconds. What is
the automobile’s acceleration?
THINK ABOUT IT!

If the velocity of an object is

zero, does it mean that the
acceleration is zero? Support
your answer.
ANSWER
The answer is NO.
It is possible to have a non-zero
value of acceleration when the
velocity of a body is zero.
This can happen when an object goes in
a particular direction and an external
force acts upon it. Due to this force, the
velocity of the object starts decreasing
and continues to decrease until it
reaches zero.
After this, the object starts moving in
the opposite direction (that is in the
direction of force). At that point the
instantaneous velocity of an object will
only become zero but its over all
velocity will not.
EXAMPLE
EXPLANATION
When a ball is thrown upwards the
gravitational force of the earth acts on it in the
opposite direction. At the highest point, the
velocity of the ball becomes zero, after which it
starts to fall down. At this point, the velocity of
the ball is zero yet its acceleration is equal to
g=9.8m/s2.

Write your complete solution in your notebook.

3) A parachute on a racing dragster opens and

changes the speed of the car from 85 m/s to
45 m/s in a period of 4.5 seconds. What is the
acceleration of the dragster?
Check your work!
1) G: = 25 m/s t = 5 s
= 60 m/s
𝑣 𝑓 − 𝑣𝑖
U:
S: = = ⃗𝒂 ∆t
A: = 7 m/s/s or 7 m/s²
Check your work!
2) G: = 24 m/s t = 12 s
= 15 m/s
𝑣 𝑓 − 𝑣𝑖
U:
S: = = ⃗𝒂 ∆t
A: = -0.75 m/s/s or –o.75 m/s²

Negative acceleration indicates a slowing down or deceleration.

Check your work!
3) G: = 85 m/s t = 4.5 s
= 45 m/s
𝑣 𝑓 − 𝑣𝑖
U:
S: = = ⃗𝒂 ∆t
A: = -8.89 m/s/s or -8.89m/s²

Negative acceleration indicates a slowing down or deceleration.

m/s2. If Calys took 8 seconds to reach Gel’s house,
what was her initial velocity?
