EAPP-Week 7

This document provides information about concept papers, including their purpose and typical parts. A concept paper summarizes a proposed project in order to determine feasibility and interest from potential funders before a full proposal is submitted. It typically ranges from 500-2000 words and includes sections like an introduction, rationale or background, project description, needs and costs. The concept paper helps funding agencies eliminate unlikely proposals and allows proponents to get informal feedback on their ideas.

Do you know that all the
meanings and interpretations
you have provided are called
CONCEPTS?
Activity
• Read the selection, Facts About COVID19.
• Answer the questions:
1. What is the text all about?
2. What ideas are presented in the text? How
are they presented?
3. What are the impacts of Covid-19 to you as
a student? To your family? To the
community?
DEFINITION
Three Ways to
Elucidate a EXPLICATION
Concept
CLARIFICATION
DEFINITION
Definition identifies a term and sets it apart
from all other terms that may be related to it.

Often, definitions begin by mentioning the

general class to which a term belongs. Then
they provide specifics to distinguish the term
from other members of that class.
DEFINITION
Definition is the method of identifying a
given term and making its meaning clearer.
It can be presented in three ways:
1. Formal
2. Informal
3. Extended
DEFINITION
1. FORMAL DEFINITION
-explains a term to be defined, category, and
details
-follows a pattern or equation:
term + genus + differentia
(word or phrase) + (class of object or concept) +(differentiating characteristics)
DEFINITION
1. FORMAL DEFINITION
term + genus + differentia
(differentiating characteristics)
Example:
Water (term) is a liquid (class) made up of
molecules of hydrogen and oxygen in the
ratio of 2 to 1 (differentiating characteristics).
DEFINITION
1. FORMAL DEFINITION
term + genus + differentia
(differentiating characteristics)
Example:
Comic books (term) are sequential and narrative
publications (class) consisting of illustrations, captions,
dialogue balloons, and often focus on super-powered
heroes (differentiating characteristics).
DEFINITION
2. INFORMAL DEFINITION
-is done through a parenthetical or brief
explanation
-uses known words or examples to explain an
unknown term through synonyms, stipulation,
analogy or illustration
DEFINITION
2. INFORMAL DEFINITION
Example:
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is
necessary for the growth, development and
repair of all body tissues.
DEFINITION
2. INFORMAL DEFINITION
Example:
Freedom, also referred to as liberty or
independence, is a state that people reach
when they are free to think and do whatever
they please.
DEFINITION
FORMAL OR INFORMAL?

Technology is like a robot that make life

easier.
INFORMAL
DEFINITION
FORMAL OR INFORMAL?

Technology involves the use of machineries

in every aspect of work.
INFORMAL
DEFINITION
FORMAL OR INFORMAL?

Technology is the branch of knowledge

dealing with engineering or applied sciences.
FORMAL
DEFINITION
FORMAL OR INFORMAL?

Morphine is a white, bitter, crystalline alkaloid

that is used chiefly in medicine as a pain reliever
and sedative.
FORMAL
DEFINITION
FORMAL OR INFORMAL?

Morphine , also known as C17H19NO3⋅H2O, is the

most important narcotic and addictive principle of
opium, obtained by extraction and crystallization.
INFORMAL
DEFINITION
3. EXTENDED DEFINITION
- is a detailed way of defining and term and
usually composed of at least one paragraph
(formal and informal, comparison and contrast,
narration, description)
3. EXTENDED DEFINITION
Example: Senior high school or SHS refers to the last
two years of the K to 12 program that has been
implemented by the Department of Education here
in the Philippines since 2012 – namely, grades 11 and
12. Students are now required to choose their
preferred senior high strands upon their entrance
and to begin studying the subjects that are going to
introduce them to the career path that they want to
take.
DEFINITION
Signal Words for Definition:
as defined, for example, for instance, is
defined as, means, such as and to illustrate
EXPLICATION
Explication is the process by which
concepts are defined for scientific purposes.

"To explicate" something is to spell out its

implications.
EXPLICATION
Explication, in other words, is a kind of
explanation.
It is a method of explanation in which
sentences, verses, quotes or passages are
taken from a literary or academic work and
then interpreted and explained in a detailed
way.
EXPLICATION
(Example) In his very first paragraph of A Tale of
Two Cities, Charles Dickens demonstrates both
similarity and contrast existed between the two
countries, England and France during the French
Revolution. This passage presents an image of
chaos and turmoil, which ensue due to a clash
between extreme ideas between the two different
countries and their people.
CLARIFICATION
Clarification is a method of explanation in
which the points are organized from a general
abstract idea to specific and concrete
examples.
It is an analysis of an abstract concept through
investigation of examples and the identification
of critical and less critical attributes.
CLARIFICATION
It involves offering back to the speaker the
essential meaning, as understood by the
listener, of what they have just said.

Thereby checking that the listener's

understanding is correct and resolving any
areas of confusion or misunderstanding.
CLARIFICATION
(Example) Justice is a broad concept which
encompasses a wide set of ideas, most of which
also branch out into similar notions. For instance,
it can refer to the sentencing of criminal based on
due process. When an individual gets what he
deserves outside the hands of the law, it is also
considered justice in some contexts.…….
CLARIFICATION
Signal words for clarification:
After all, as an example, for instance, in other
words, in particular, specifically, to clarify, to
be specific

WHAT IS
A
CONCEPT PAPER?
Prior to the submission of a project
proposal, proponents are requested to
submit a summary of what the project
is all about, the reasons for
conducting a project, and how it will
be carried out.
This summary is called a CONCEPT
PAPER.
A concept paper provides an
overview of the project, and helps
funding agencies eliminate
proposals that are likely to be
disapproved.
A concept paper has several uses:
1. Serves as a foundation of the full proposal
2. Helps determine whether a certain project
is feasible or not
3. Used to pique the interest of the potential
funding agencies
4. Used to obtain informal feedback on the
ideas prior to preparing the full proposal
PARTS OF
A CONCEPT
PAPER
PARTS OF A CONCEPT PAPER
A concept paper usually ranges from 500 –
2000 words and is usually divided into several
parts.
The following sections to be discussed in this
lesson are merely suggestions for the content of
the paper; ultimately, any one who wishes to
write a concept paper needs to follow the format
and design required by the funding agency.
PARTS OF A CONCEPT PAPER
The parts of a concept paper may
also vary depending on the nature of
the project/activity.
On the following slides, are outlines of
a concept paper based on the
context.
PARTS of Concept Paper for a Project
1. Cover Page
• Name of the proponents and their affiliations
• Addresses, contact numbers and e-mail
addresses of the proponents
• Head of the agency and his/her contact
information
• Date of submission
