Constructivism

This document discusses constructivism, a theory of learning where learners construct new knowledge based on their experiences and prior knowledge. There are two views of constructivism: individual constructivism which emphasizes internal knowledge construction, and social constructivism where knowledge is initially shared and exists in a social context. Key characteristics of constructivism include learners actively constructing understanding, new learning building on current knowledge, social interaction facilitating learning, and meaningful learning occurring through authentic tasks. The document also discusses organizing knowledge through concepts, prototypes, and exemplars, and how to apply constructivism to facilitate effective learning through varied examples, hands-on activities, and relating topics to real life.

What is Constructivism?

A theory in education where learners learn

directly new knowledge and understanding
through their experience and prior knowledge.
Views of Constructivism
Two views of Constructivism
Individual Constructivism
 It emphasize individual and internal construction of
knowledge.

Social Constructivism
- Knowledge exists in a social context and is initially
shared with others instead of being represented solely
in the mind of individual.
Characteristics of Constructivism
 According to Eggen and Kauchak there are four
characteristics that those views have in common.
1. Learners construct understanding
2. New learning depends on current understanding
3. Learning is facilitated by social interaction
4. Meaningful learning occurs within authentic learning tasks
1. Learners construct understanding
 Constructivist see learners as an active thinkers.

2. New learning depends on current understanding

 Background information or background knowledge is very
important.
3. Learning is facilitated by social
interaction
 Learnershave a lot of opportunities to cooperate and
collaborate to solve problems and discover things.
4. Meaningful learning occurs within authentic
learning tasks
 Tasks
given in the learners to relate their understanding and
knowledge in real-world.
Organizing knowledge

Concept
 Way of grouping or categorizing objects or events in
our mind.
Concept as feature lists
 Learning a concept involves learning specific features
that characterize positive instance of a concept .
Concept as prototypes
 is an idea or visual image of a typical example.
Concept as exemplars
 represent a variety of examples. It allows learner to
know that an example under a concept may have
variability.
Making Concept- Learning
Effective
 Provide a clear definition of the concept
 Make the defining features very concrete and
prominent
 Give a variety of positive instances
 Cite a “best example "or a prototypes
 Give negative instances
 Provide opportunities for learners to identify
positive and instances
 As learners to think of their own example of the
concept.
 Point out how concept can be related to each other.
Applying constructivism in
facilitating learning
 Aim to make learners understand a few key ideas in
an in-dept manner, rather than taking up so many
topics superficially.
 Give a varied example
 Provide opportunities for experimentation
 Have lots of hands-on activities
 Relate your topic to real life situations
 Do not on the explanation method all the time
Transfer of Learning

 Happens when learning is one context or with

one set of materials affects performance in
another context or with other related materials,
simply put, it is applying to another situation
what was previously learned.
Types of transfer
 Positive transfer
 Negative transfer
 Near transfer
 Far transfer

opportunities for practice
