Input devices in the home
Keyboard
-The main input device.
-It facilitates a quick and easy way to
enter data.
-The keys on a keyboard represent a
letter of the alphabet, digit, symbol or
function.
-To use it takes some practice and it is
easy to make mistakes
Varieties of Keyboards
Braille Keyboard- Used by visually impaired
computer users
Virtual Keyboard
Projects an image of a keyboard on any flat surface
that works the same as a normal ‘physical’ keyboard.
Mouse
-It is a pointing device.
-Used to manipulate data and program
instructions by pointing, selecting,
dragging and clicking.
-The cursor or mouse pointer moves on the
screen in sync with your movements.
There are different types.
*Corded/Wired
*Cordless/Wireless
*Optical /Laser
*Radio
Track ball
Similar to the mouse. However it remains in one
stationary position. The cursor is moved by moving
the ball .
Joystick
-Point and click input device.
-Moves the pointer on the screen according to the movement of
the lever by the user.
-Used mostly for games because they have limited
functionality.
Digital Cameras
-Uses a light sensor to capture an image which
it then converts into electrical charges.
-Stores the image on a flash memory card.
-Photos on a digital camera can be transferred
to a computer, where it can be edited and
printed.
Web Cameras
-Optimised for video.
-Commonly used for Internet telephony (Skype,
MSN, WhatsApp, SnapChat and Google
Hangout) and teleconferencing
Microphone
-Used for inputting audio data into the
computer.
-Can be utilised for real time person to person
conversations during online chat and
teleconferencing.
- Can also be used to record audio clips for
webcasts, broadcasting, advertising and
filmmaking.
Document Scanner
-Used to input text, diagrams and pictures into
the computer.
-Are often used in conjunction with specialised
software. For example an optical character
reading system uses a scanner together with
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software.
- Captures data directly at its source which aids in
accurate data capture.
