Video editing involves manipulating and arranging video shots to structure and present video content. It includes cutting segments, rearranging clips, and adding transitions and effects. There are two main types of video editing: linear editing uses video tape and edits clips in the recorded order, while non-linear editing allows random access to digital clips and more editing flexibility using specialized software on computers. The goals of editing include removing unwanted footage, selecting the best clips, creating a coherent narrative, and changing the style or mood.

Introduction to video editing
• Editing is reviewing and changing a document by making additions,
deletions, or other changes to conform to some agreed-upon standard. • Video editing is the manipulation and arrangement of video shots. Video editing is used to structure and present all video information, including films and television shows, video advertisements and video essays. • Video editing includes cutting segments (trimming), re-sequencing clips, and adding transitions and other special effects. • Why Editing? (The Goals of Editing) • ● Remove unwanted footage ● • Choosing the best footage (called selects) • ● Creating a flow (telling a story, providing information) • ● Adding effects, graphics, music, etc. • ● Change the style, pace or mood of footage (found or created) speed, slow motion ex. • ● Telling a specific viewpoint on a subject/topic Types of Video editing • Linear video editing uses video tape and is edited in a very linear way. Several video clips from different tapes are recorded to one single tape in the order that they will appear. • Linear video editing is the process of selecting, arranging and modifying the images and sound recorded on videotape whether captured by a video camera, or recorded in a studio.Video shots are structured in such a way that they are shot in order and of correct length. This process does not require any additional equipment other than the Camcorder itself, but requires good shooting and organizational skills at the time of the shoot. Non Linear • This is a method that allows you to access any frame in a digital video clip regardless of sequence in the clip. This method allows you to easily include fades, transitions, and other effects that cannot be achieved with linear editing.Video and audio data are first captured to hard disks or other digital storage devices. The data is either recorded directly to the storage device or is imported from another source. Once imported they can be edited on a computer using any of a wide range of software. • Non-linear editing systems (NLE) allow video to be edited on computers with specialized software. This process is not destructive to the raw video footage and is done by using programs such as DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. • A computer for non-linear editing of video will usually have a video capture card to capture analog video and/or a FireWire connection to capture digital video from a DV camera, with its video editing software. Modern web based editing systems can take video directly from a camera phone over a GPRS or 3G mobile connection, and editing can take place through a web browser interface. • Offline editing is the process by which raw footage is copied from an original source, without affecting the original film stock or video tape. Once the editing is complete, the original media is then re-assembled in the online editing stage. • Online editing is the process of reassembling the edit to full resolution video after an offline edit has been performed. It is done in the final stage of a video production • Cloud-based editing is the process of utilising the internet to work with content remotely, collaboratively or of a time-critical nature such as editing of live sports events in real-time using video proxies (lower resolution copies) of original material. • Vision mixing is used when working within live television and video production environments. A vision mixer is used to cut live feed coming from several cameras in real time.
