Water Resource

Engineering
What is Water Resource
Engineering?

2
◉ a specialization of Civil Engineering which involves the:
◉ control of water resources to prevent destruction to life and
properties
◉ preservation and management of water resources for human,
agricultural, industrial, and navigation purposes

3
◉ involves scientific methods and engineering principles in
the collection and interpretation of the physical, chemical,
and mechanical properties of water

4
◉ the quantitative study of the hydrologic cycle (water cycle) –
the distribution and circulation of water linking the earth’s
atmosphere, land, and bodies of water

5
◉  Water Resource Engineering is concerned with the technical
aspects of how the water is stored and chanelled to other
locations.

6
◉ This field deal with the design and construction of hydraulic
structures. These structures include dams, canals and water
distribution system.

7
What do Water Resource
Engineers do?

8
plan, design, manage, and maintain facilities such as

◉ spillways
◉ drainages and drainage systems
◉ sewers
◉ canals
◉ irrigation systems
◉ dams

9
◉ dikes
◉ breakwaters
◉ reservoirs
◉ pumps
◉ water and wastewater treatment systems or plants
◉ pipes and pipe networks

10
◉ water conveyance systems
◉ water tanks and storage systems
◉ seepage control systems
◉ hydroelectric powerplants
◉ navigation systems

11
to ensure that the water requirements of the society and the
environment are met, the quantities of the following are
estimated:

◉ current available water supply

◉ current water demand
◉ projected water supply and demand considering significant
factors
◉ conveyance losses from water source to point of
consumption

12
◉ considers budgetary constraints, government regulations,
and other factors when planning and designing related
structures
◉ They ensure water can be channelled where it is needed in a
safe and efficient way.

13
◉ Plan and manage the tasks that are required to maintain
water quality.

14
Major Specialties of
Water Resource
Engineering

15
Hydraulic Engineering

◉ concerned with the flow and conveyance of fluids,

principally water; intimately related to the design of
pipelines, water supply network, drainage facilities
(including bridges, dams, levees, channels, culverts, storm
sewers), and canals.

16
River Engineering

◉  It is the process of planned human intervention in the

course, characteristics, or flow of a river with the intention
of producing some defined benefit—to manage the water
resources, to protect against flooding, or to make passage
along or across rivers easier.

17
Coastal Engineering

◉ It is the study of the processes ongoing at the shoreline and

construction within the coastal zone, often directed at
combating erosion of coasts or providing navigational
access.

18
Groundwater Engineering

◉  It involves the analysis, monitoring and often modeling of

groundwater source to better understand how much
remains and if the water can be used for e.g. recharging
reservoirs and irrigation.

19
Areas of Study

20
A Water Resources Engineer must be knowledgeable of the
following:

◉ Water sources:
◉ Surface runoff (from precipitation)
◉ Groundwater
◉ Lakes
◉ Rivers
◉ Streams
◉ Oceans

21
◉ Water qualities and properties
◉ Water pollution
◉ Hydrology (particularly Hydrologic cycle)
◉ Fluid mechanics

22
◉ Hydraulics
◉ Laboratory apparatus and equipment used within the areas
of study of the specialization
◉ Other related principles from the various subdisciplines of
Civil Engineering and allied sciences
