Persons and Career Pathways

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
PREPARED BY:
ANGELICA A. ALMEDA
LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
 Explain that understanding different factors, career development concepts
and personal life goals influence career planning and decision-making.
[EsP-PD11/12PC-IIf-12.1]
 Identify career options based on different factors, career development
concepts and personal life goals [EsP-PD11/12PC-IIf-12.2]
External Factors that Influence Career Choices
1.Life Roles.

• Super’s Lifespan Theory states that we play varied roles

throughout our lifespan and these roles shape the way
we look at things and our choices. For an adolescent, the
roles he or she may play ranges from being a son or a
daughter, a pupil in elementary or high school, a
student’s leaders a youth community organizer and many
more. These roles may shape his/her decision regarding
which particular career to take.
2. Previous Experience.

According to Krumholtz’s Social Learning and

Planned Happenstance theories, an individual
previous work experience with people whom
they consider to be positive role models will
direct his/her choice of a specific career.
3.Culture and Community.

There are values and expectations unique and

important to each culture. These values and
expectation may be embraced by individual
out of need for acceptance within the group
or community where he or she belongs.
4.Social and Economic conditions.

Varied changes in economy may affect choices in career. There was

a time in the past when a career in nursing was very popular
career choice in the country which led many adolescents to choose
such college program due to lucrative employment opportunities
abroad. However, when the demand for nurses abroad slowly
declined, many decided to enroll in college programs that were
considered more practical.
5.Childhood Fantasies.

Most children were asked the question “What do you

want to be when you grow up?” and whatever their
answer was influenced their career choices. This concept
is supportive by Ginsberg’s theory describing three life
stages related to career development. The first stage of
which is fantasy, where early concept about career are
formed up 14 years old.
6.Ideal Job.

The career choice of an adolescent may be due to his or

her perceived “ideal job”. The idea of perfect job still
exists and is considered a goal by many. The perfect job
could be something that is “exactly what you want to get
up, go and do every day”. However, there is no perfect
work or employment. Employees have to fit in and learn
about the job to maximize performance.
7.Parents.
Records and career counseling show that parents are an
influential factor in career decision. They may urge their
children to take their career path or engage in career that
is most promising for promotion and high income. Thus,
an adolescent may be attracted to a particular work due
to a work or career history of their parents because they
are thriving and achieving in their specific line of work.
