Computer Ports

This document discusses various types of computer ports and connectors. It begins by contrasting older computers that only used keyboards, mice and printers with modern computers that use many connection types like USB, FireWire, network jacks and audio/video ports. It then provides diagrams and descriptions of common computer ports like serial ports, PS/2 ports for keyboards and mice, USB ports, FireWire ports, Ethernet ports, parallel ports, power connectors and eSATA ports. The document explains what each port is used for and includes diagrams of their connectors and pinouts.

Introduction

 In the past connecting devices to your computer are at ease when we only use the
keyboard, mouse, monitor and printers but now We have to deal with USB, FireWire,
network jacks and an assortment of audio and video connections. All those will be
presented in this presentation

Simple PC With only mouse New types of Connectors USB are the

keyboard and printer for new devices as most popular

Technology grew

What are Ports?

 On computer, a port is generally a specific place for

being physically connected to some other device,
usually with a socket or plug which we call Connectors
Diagram of Serial Port
What are Serial Port

 Serial port is a electronic communication gateway used for transferring data

one bit at a time.
 Together with parallel port the serial port was used almost for all type of
information transfer between a computer and other peripheral devices.
 Today the serial port has been replaced with dedicated ports like USB port,
VGA port and etc.
What are Connectors?

A connector is any connector used within computers

or to connect computers to networks, printers or other
devices.

Many types of computer connectors

The PS/2 Connector

 The PS/2 connector are use

for connecting keyboard
and mouse on the modern
PCs. The PS2 mouse
connector and port is
usually green in colour to
distinguish it from the PS2
keyboard, which is purple.
PS/2 PORTS

 Pin 1 Data
 Pin 2 Not Connected
 Pin 3 Ground
 Pin 4 VDC +5V at 275 mA
 Pin 5 Clock
 Pin 6 Not Connected
The USB Port

 Universal Serial Bus: a

protocol for transferring data
to and from digital devices.
Many digital cameras and
memory card readers connect
to the USB port on a
computer.
USB Pinout

 Pin 1 - VCC +5V

 Pin 2 – Data –
 Pin 3 – Data +
 Pin 4 - GND
The Firewire IEEE 1394 Port

 A type of cabling
technology for
transferring data to and
from digital devices at
high speed. FireWire
are typically faster than
those that connect via
USB.
Firewire 6- pin and 4-pin
The RJ45 Ethernet Port

 LAN or (Local Area

Network) uses a CAT5
cable and a RJ45
connection. The CAT 5
cable  is also called the
Ethernet Cable.

 Network connection
generally uses a 10/100
Mbps speed. This means it
has two different speeds 10
Mbps and 100 Mbps.
RJ45 A.K.A. Ethernet Port
DB25 Parallel Port

 The printer connects to

your computer with a
Parallel connector.
This connector has 25 pins.
 Parallel means the device is
capable of receiving more
than one bit at a time (that
is, it receives several bits in
parallel).

Power Connectors

 Figure shows a common type of

230 VAC receptacle used to
connect the power cord to things
such as personal computer.
eSATA Port

 External Series Advanced

Technology Attachment.
 Allows to connect an external
SATA hard disk to a computer.
 SATA hard disks are popular
because of their fast data
transmission speeds
