IC Engine

An internal combustion engine is a heat engine in

which the combustion of a fuel occurs with an

LOOK
oxidizer in a combustion chamber that is an integral
part of the working fluid flow circuit.
5

Classification of IC ENGINE

1. Number of Stroke per cycle

2. Type of fuel used

LOOK
3. Nature of thermodynamics cycle

4. Method of ignition

5. Number of cylinders
6
Main parts of IC Engine

• Cylinder

• Piston

LOOK
• Crankshaft

• Camshaft

• Valves

• Connecting rod

• Cylinder head
7
Some advanced parts of IC Engine
• Super charger
• Turbo charger
• EFI

LOOK
8

Four Stroke Engine

• Requires four piston strokes to complete one cycle.

• Every four strokes, the engine produces one power stroke.
• Two complete crankshaft rotations are required to complete

LOOK
the four-stroke-cycle.
• Almost all automobiles use four-stroke-cycle engines.

Two Stroke Engine

A two stroke engine is a type of IC engine that

completes a power cycle with two strokes of the

LOOK
piston during one power cycle. This power cycle
being completed in one revolution of the crankshaft

Starting System

Starting system is one of the engine`s

LOOK
system, which provides an engine start.
19

LOOK
Starting system includes:
 Battery
 Ignition Switch
 Solenoid
 Starting Motor / Starter
20

Types of starting system

1. Manual starting systems

2. Self starting system

Lubrication System

Lubrication is the action of applying a

substance such as oil or grease to an engine or
component so as to minimize friction and allow
smooth movement.

LOOK
Lubricating system is a mechanical system of
lubricating internal combustion engines in which
a pump forces oil into the engine bearings.
23

Types of lubricants

1. Solid Lubricant

LOOK
2. Semi-solid Lubricant

3. Liquid Lubricant

Engine Parts That Require Frequents
Lubrication:

Cylinder piston and Piston rings

Main Bearing
 pin and piston pin

There are three types of lubricating system used for I.C engine:
1. Mist lubrication system
2. Wet sump lubrication system
3. Dry sump lubrication

• Overheating of the components
• Wear of components
• Corrosion
• Deposits
