Water treatment

 It is the process of making water more portable and useful by purifying,

cleaning, softening, and deodorizing it.

 There are two methods of water treatment

1. Physical Methods: -include processes where no gross chemical or

biological changes are carried out and strictly physical phenomena are used
to improve or treat the wastewater

2. Examples would be coarse screening to remove larger entrained objects and

sedimentation (clarification).
Cont.….
2. Chemical Treatment: - consists of using some chemical reactions to
improve the water quality

Probably the most commonly used chemical process is chlorination

Chlorine, a strong oxidizing chemical, is used to kill bacteria and to slow
down the rate of decomposition of the wastewater.
Degasification: It is the removal of dissolved gasses from liquid water from
the source is showered through perforated pipe to the degassing tank.
Cont.….
Sedimentation: is the process in which particles separate from a liquid
because of gravity
In the sedimentation tanks some of the suspended particles will settle at the
bottom of the tanks
The company has six sedimentation tanks which are numbered from 1 to 6
with a storage capacity of 30m3 each.
Cont.….
 Filtration by sand: The water that comes from sedimentation tanks passes
through sand filter from top to bottom where most of the residual and
suspended matter is filtered from the water
 Sand filtration is a process of water purification which is used for the
removal of suspended matter as well as floating and sinkable particles.
Sand Type Grain size(mm) Height of sand(cm)

Fine sand 0-1 50

Medium sand 1-2.5 35

Coarse sand 3-5 25

Gravel 8-11 26
Cont.….
 Before starting daily production, the sand in the sand filter must be backwashed or the
sludge sediment accumulated on the sand layers must be removed by allowing strong
water current from bottom to top.
Manganese green (oxidation of iron) filter:

 As a purple black filter media used for removal of soluble iron, manganese, and
hydrogen sulfide from water

 The water that has been filtered by sand is passed to manganese green filter tank
 The amount of iron present in the water is reduced to minimum level by converting
some of the soluble state of iron to insoluble state of oxide with the help of chemical
substance meant for the purpose.
Cont.….

Activated Carbon filtration or De-Chlorination and De-Idolization:

 After reduction of iron content, the water is passed to carbon filter tank.
 The tank is filled with fine type granular activated carbon

 The activated carbon is a barrier that will capture materials that contaminate
water and gases that give water unpleasant odor or smells.
 The activated carbon should be changed by new once in six months (two
times annually). 800 kg activated carbon should be charged at a time.
 When new carbon is added, it must be back washed for a longer time until
the coating dust is completely eliminated.
Cont.….

 Filtration paper sheet: is a semi-permeable paper barrier used to separate fine solids from
liquids.
 The water filtered by activated carbon is transported to paper sheet filter which is the final
stage of filtration
 The paper sheets are horizontally aligned on the metallic fixture in between rubber (filter
pressing) plates

 The water passes from rough surface (filtration side) of the paper sheet to the smooth by

leaving all the suspended and filterable matter.

Cont.….

1. Water Softening

 Since the water from a bore hole is hard water with the concentration of 400mg/liter

calcium carbonate (CaCo3), cannot be used for utility services as it affects the surface of

materials by resulting roughness (corrosion) and scaling

 Scaling results damage on boiler surface and decreases steam generating efficiency of the
boiler and also close the steam passage lines.

 Pre softening takes place in small sand filters where the concentration of iron is reduced

 There are two softener tanks with a storage capacity of 36m3/hrs.

Cont.….

Cooling the Water

 After treatment and filtration, the water is cooled before mixing with carbon
dioxide gas
 The incoming water temperature is about 30 oC

 It has to be lower than 15 oC in order to reach maximum saturation

 The cooling process is done by using ammonia gas a refrigerant (coolant) in the
cooling tower.
Cont.….
Carbonation of the water

 CO2 gas will be mixed with the cooled water in the carbonation tank.

 miscibility of the gas increases as its temperature decreases

 The desirable temperature for good carbonation is 5-12Co

 The water gets into the tank from the top and is flushed on the steel plates
by stage.
Cont.….
Bottle Washer machine
 Before the production of RGB starts, the bottles returned from the market will
be washed in bottle washer tank using caustic soda (NaOH).
 The process of bottle washing passes through seven stapes(compartments):pre
rinsing tank, caustic tank one, caustic tank two, warm tank one, warm tank two,
post caustic tank and final rinse tank.

Pre rinsing: -
 The pre rinse tank simply rinses the bottles by using fresh water at room
temperature.
 There are no any washer additive chemicals in the pre rinse.
Cont.….
Caustic tanks: -
 Caustic tank one and caustic tank two uses fresh water, caustic soda and additional
washer additive chemicals and stabling mix powder are mixed with caustic. The
washer additives used to remove expired date or production dates from the returned
(old) bottles. The range of caustic tanks temperature is 60 0c-750c and the temperature
decreases from pre rinse to final rinse. In addition to their temperature, caustic tanks
differ in their capacity of cleaning the bottle.
Post caustic tank: -
Post caustic tank is used to remove over carried caustic soda on the bottles from caustic tanks by better washing.
Warm tanks:-
Used for better washing of bottles by spraying water on the bottle’s surface and for removal of water by over flow.
.
Cont.….
Final rinsing tank: -
The final rinse tank is used for final washing using fresh or soft water and
ferrosol (anti scale and anti-corrosion), Horo light (PH adjusting), chlorine
(removal of microorganisms), pollex XT (bottle shining or fine appearance) and
sodium hypochlorite (biocide) chemicals. In washing tank, the temperature will
be lowered to 200c – 400c and finally the bottle leaves the final washing
compartment with lower temperature.
Cont.….
 The concentration of caustic to clean bottles ranges between 2-3%.

 If it is below two, the bottle will not be cleaned properly and if it greater than three
percent, it will result over carry unwanted caustic on the bottle.
 The bottles that cannot be cleaned in bottle washer are selected and sent out for better
cleaning by nitrate compound.
 Here using 30L nitrate, about 30 pilot (60 boxes) or 12000 bottles can be cleaned and sent
again to bottle washer.
 After the bottles are cleaned, bottle inspection, filling, labeling, check mat and inverse
labeled bottles, packing and storing for transportation takes place respectively. Generally,
the company produces 24000 bottles per hour every single day with a capacity of 475ML.
Raw materials for the RGB production line are water and carbon dioxide.
Cont.….

Filler machine
 This machine is used to fill water to the bottles
Cont.….
LABELING

The Cinematic attaches pre-cut paper or film wrap-around

labels to cans, bottles and jars of widely differing sizes and
shapes. The simple and effective-labels are attached directly to
the containers without the need for gluing pallets.
Cont.….

Packer and Unpacker machines

 Unpacker is a machine which differentiates the dirty crate and
the dirty bottles and Packer is a machine which picks up a
product water filled bottles and put in the washed crate.
Cont.….
Storage of full bottles
 The full bottle contained in plastic crates or cartons should be
kept in a clean storage area. The store should be free from any
other materials. The store should be used only for “Ambo
Mineral Water storage”. The walls and floor of the store should
be regularly cleaned. The roof of the store house should be free
from water leakage.
Cont.….
Water quality
 Dissolved oxygen (DO):- is the amount of oxygen in the water
which uses most aquatic organisms to survive and grow.
 Temperature: -is a measure of average energy or kinetic of
water molecules. It affects water chemistry and the functions of
the aquatic organisms.
 Electrical conductivity/salinity: -is the ability of water to
conduct an electrical current and is the measure of salt
concentration in the water.

CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
 The company produces Ethiopian Icon product. By
using the natural mineral water the company produces
different products like different flavors and carbonated
water. With the help of some labor and educated force
the company produce approximately 200,000 -300,000
bottles of Ambo Carbonated water and flavors per day.
 The companies spend less because it uses only natural
raw water that is rich in minerals. Ambo mineral Water
factory product has been accepted for its good quality
and has no competence with other company’s which
produce the same products.
Recommendations
 Training workers about hygiene and sanitation in a food processing
factory
 Preparing a transport means for the workers
 Hiring more people to increase production efficiency
 Putting first aid kits in places where workers might need them
