Parts and Functions of Microscope

The document summarizes the main parts of a microscope and their functions. The key parts include the ocular lens, body tube, nose piece, objective lenses, stage, stage clips, diaphragm, light source, arm, coarse adjustment knob, and fine adjustment knob. The body tube holds the objective lenses and ocular lens at the proper distance. The nose piece holds interchangeable objective lenses. The objective lenses provide magnification close to the specimen. The stage supports the slide and is held in place by stage clips. The diaphragm controls light levels and the light source projects light through the microscope. The adjustment knobs are used to focus the image by moving the stage up and down.

Body Tube
• The body tube holds the objective
lenses and the ocular lens at the proper
distance

Diagram
The tube….
The tube….
• Importance: An inner tube carries the
eyepiece at its upper end, while; the
external tube supports objectives at its
lower end and hold them in line with
eyepieces and at the correct distance
apart. Thos objectives are screwed into
a revolving nose piece.
Nose Piece
• The Nose Piece holds the objective
lenses and can be turned to increase
the magnification

Diagram
Objective Lenses
• The Objective Lenses increase
magnification (usually from 10x to 40x)

Diagram
Objectives….
Definition:
• Are magnifying lenses of a microscope
that are closest to the object and ones
which forms the primary image of the
object.
• The quality of image seen is dependent
on the quality and condition of these
lenses.
Stage Clips
• These 2 clips hold the slide/specimen in
place on the stage.

Diagram
Diaphragm
• The Diaphragm controls the amount of
light on the slide/specimen

Turn to let more light in or to

make dimmer.

Diagram
Light Source
• Projects light upwards through the
diaphragm, the specimen and the
lenses
• Some have lights, others have mirrors
where you must move the mirror to
reflect light

Diagram
Ocular Lens/Eyepiece
• Magnifies the specimen image

Diagram
Arm
• Used to support the microscope when
carried. Holds the body tube, nose
piece and objective lenses

Diagram
Stage
• Supports the slide/specimen

Diagram
The stage….
• Is a platform which accommodates a
glass microscope slide on which
specimen to be examined is mounted
and is provided with spring stage clips
to hold specimen in place a.ka or
mechanical stage.
The stage….
• Positions: It is found below the
objectives lenses.
• Composition: It is a flat plate. In the
centre of the stage there is a circular
hole to allow light to pass from the
condenser to the objectives.
• Importance: To hold specimen under
examination.
THE SUBSTAGE
• Position: Is situated immediately below
the stage.
• Importance: It holds the condenser
(lens) and the iris diaphragm, also
provides a holder for light filters and
attachments e.g. the dark field
illumination attachment.
• The sub stage condenser can be raised
or lowered to give maximum or minimum
illumination.
Coarse Adjustment Knob
• Moves the stage up and down (quickly)
for focusing your image

Diagram
Fine Adjustment Knob
• This knob moves the stage SLIGHTLY
to sharpen the image

Diagram
Base
• Supports the microscope
