OBJECTIVES:

1. Identify the minerals important to society

2. Describe how ore minerals are found, mined,

and processed for human use
MINERALS
IMPORTANT TO
SOCIETY
Quartz
 One of the toughest and widespread mineral
 Makes nice jewelries in the form of amethyst, rock
crystals and smoky quartz.
 Quartz is also part of every computer and optical
devices in the form of silicium (silicon)
Feldspar
 A group of silicate minerals that compromise a large
portion of the Earth’s crust
 Highly useful as a resource for ceramics, pottery
(clay minerals play a role here), and construction
materials
Calcite / Aragonite
 Veryimportant resources for a variety of
economical activities like cement production,
paints, filing materials, glass and ceramics

CALCITE ARAGONITE
Silver

 Used for electrical

conductors,
photography, dental
and medical uses

 Also used in making

jewelries
Copper

 Itis used for electrical

conductors, motors,
appliances, piping and
in metal alloys
Gold

 usedin medical and

dental equipment

 Also
used in electrical
conductors, and mostly
in making jewelries
Zinc
 usedfor protective
coatings for steel,
casting alloys, and
extensively in
medicines
Talc
 Used
in paper
manufacturing

 Widelyused in the
cosmetic industry
Nickel

 primarily used to
manufacture
stainless steel
Olivine
 It may be found in basalts which is what most people
know
 It can be beautifully green and of “gemstone quality”
Chalcosine / Chalcopyrite
 These two minerals are actually different but
together the most important source of copper –
second best electrical conductor

CHALCOPYRITE
CHALCOSINE
HOW ARE ORE MINERALS
MINED?
WHAT ARE ORE MINERALS?
 An ore is a special type of rock that contains a large
amount of a particular mineral

 Itcan be removed from large formation of rocks

through a process known as mining

 Ores can be mined in a number of ways, including

strip mining, surface mining, & subsurface mining
SURFACE MINING
 Itallows extraction of ores that are close to the Earth’s
surface
 This includes the strip mining
STRIP MINING
SUBSURFACE MINING
 Used when the materials being mined are
below the Earth’s surface

 This means that the mining must occur below

the surface as well because the resources can’t
be accessed from surface level

 Consists of digging tunnels or shafts to reach

buried mineral deposits
