Lesson 1
SOCIETY
COURSE TITLE: Science, Technology, and Society
Course Credit : 3
Course Description: The course deals with interactions between science and
technology and social, cultural, political, and economic contexts that shape and are
shaped by them. (CMO No.20, series of 2013)

This interdisciplinary course engages students to confront the realities brought
about by science and technology in society. Such realities pervade the personal, the
public, and the global aspects of our living and are integral to human development.
Scientific knowledge and technological development happen in the context of
society with all its socio-political, cultural, economic, and philosophical
underpinnings at play. This course seeks to instill reflective knowledge in the
students that they are able to live the good life and display ethical decision making
in the face of scientific and technological advancement.
This course includes mandatory topics on climate change and environmental
awareness.
Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this course, the students should be able to :

 Discuss the interactions between S&T and society throughout

history.
 Articulate major development programs and agenda of Science
and Technology in the Philippines
 Discuss the role of Science and Technology in Philippine nation
building
 Analyze the human condition in order to deeply reflect and express
philosophical ramifications that are meaningful to the students as a
part of society
What is Philosophical Ramification?
Philosophical ramifications refers to the implications or consequences that a particular idea or
theory has for other areas of philosophy or for our understanding of the world more generally. It
can also refer to the ways in which a particular idea or theory may influence or shape our beliefs,
values, and actions. In this way, philosophical ramifications can help to reveal the deeper
significance and meaning of a particular concept or idea and can also highlight any potential
problems or issues that may arise from its acceptance or implementation.
Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society
LEARNING OUTCOMES

 Examine shared concerns that make up the good life in

order to come up with innovative, creative solutions to
contemporary issues guided by ethical standards.
 Illustrate how the social media and the information age have
impacted our lives.
 Discuss the ethics and implications of GMOs and potential future
impacts
 Discuss the major impacts (both potential and realized) or
nanotechnology on society

WHAT IS SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY ?
Science, Technology and Society is the
study of how society, politics, and
culture affect scientific research and
technological innovation, and how
these, in turn, affect society, politics
and  culture.
What is/are the
importance or relevance
of the study of STS ?  1. To understand how science, technology
and social, cultural and material elements
that influence the formation of new
practices, new ways of understanding and
new institutions important in
understanding contemporary postmodern
society
2. New technology and knowledge is
fundamental to gauge and imagine
the direction and what is the
possible future.
WHAT IS SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY ?

3.  The interaction between science and

technology with society is a very important
field of inquiry which not only leads us to
understand not only their relevance but also
their limitation and the problem they create.

Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society
 "Modern Science is a discovery as well as an
invention" - John Heilbron
 Famous American science historian
 Considered science as a discovery of regularity in
nature, enough for phenomena to be described by
principles and laws.
 Also explained that science required invention to
devise techniques,abstractions,apparatuses, and
organizations to describe these natural regularities
and their law-like descriptions.
