Substance Use and Abuse
It is a growing problem in PH. According to International Narcotics Control Board
(INCB), an international drug monitoring agency, the PH is one of the countries in SA
where drug trafficking is growing in numbers.

It is also a social and health concern. Poverty has became the cause for illegal
drug trade.

WHAT IS DRUG ABUSE?

o It is the use of any chemical substance, licit or illicit, resulting to


individual’s physical, mental or social impairment.

It may refer to any of the ff.

1. STIMULANTS

- Also known as “uppers”


- This excites that central nervous system. Increases alertness,
alleviate fatigue, reduce hunger and provide a feeling of well
being.
- Ex. Cocaine, Methamphetamine (Shabu)

2. DEPRESSANTS

 Also called as “downers” or “barbs”

 This decreases the act of any bodily function.


Used to refer drugs that reduce the act of the
central nervous system.
 Ex. Sedatives, Sleeping pills, Tranquilizers.

3. HALLUCINOGENS

 Also called as “psychedelics”


 First developed as appetite suppressant
 Any natural or synthetic psychoactive
drugs that produce marked distortion of the
sense and change in perception.
 Ex. MJ, LSD, Ecstasy, Ketamine
CONTENTS OF SHABU
 Ephedrine- (Classified as Dangerous Drugs) main ingredient of shabu
causing brain damage
 Toluene- chemical used for paints, adhesive, etc.
 Acetone- nail cleaner
 Lithium Batteries-cancer causing component
 Battery Acid- corrosive chemical
 Drain Cleaner- liquid soap
 Hydrochloric Acid- muriatic acid
 Chloroform- cancer causing solvent.

Alchohol

 It is a powerful drug. Contains “ethanol” (ethyl alcohol)


that is toxic and poisonous drug.

 It damages all major organs. It is also consider as a depressant drug, not


a stimulant. It vary in color and taste depending on ingredients use.
