Prcis Writing

What is a prcis?
 The term prcis is derived from a French word which means precise or accurately expressed.  An Abstract  A Gist

Definition
 Prcis is a clear & compact logical summary of a passage. It preserves only the essential or important ideas of the original.  Prcis is a type of summarizing that insists on an exact reproduction of the logic, organization, and emphasis of the original texts.

Importance
Words are like leaves & where they most abound Much fruit of sense beneath is rarely found

Example
 One son telegraphed as follows: Thanks for the money you sent me. I can save it for urgent needs, and it came just in the nick of time. I appreciate your kindness beyond words.  The other son telegraphed thus: Saved

Guidelines for writing an effective prcis

Requirements: - Concentration - Sensitivity to word meanings and the authors viewpoint - Ability to distinguish between major minor points - A sense of proportion and emphasis

What to do?/what not to do?


 Do not introduce ideas of your own  Reduce the original passage to one-quarter to one-fifth of its size  Do not copy a single sentence from the article  Do not begin with such expression as The author says or the paragraph begins  Omit repetition and such detail as examples, illustrations and adjectives  Do not use Direct Speech  Do change First person into Third person

Prcis of a phrase or clause


He was a man who lived at the same time as Shakespeare lived. - He was a contemporary of Shakespeare

His post was one for which no remuneration was paid to him. - His post was honorary.

Prcis of sentence
At the very outset, I should like to avail myself of this opportunity of expressing my deep sense of the honour which your society has conferred upon me by inviting me to address it on this occasion. - The society has greatly honoured me by asking me to address it.
