What is HCI?
• Human-computer interaction (HCI) is a multidisciplinary
field of study on the design of computer technology and,
in particular, the interaction between humans (the user)
and computers. While initially concerned with
computers, HCI has since expanded to cover almost all
forms of information technology design.

WHAT ARE THE THREE PARTS OF
HCI?
HCI includes three intersecting components:
• A human
• A computer
• The interaction between them

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF HCI?
A basic goal of HCI is to improve the interactions between users and
computers by making computers more usable and receptive to the user’s
needs. HCI is concerned with:
Methodologies and process for designing interfaces (i.e., given a task and
a class of users, design the best possible interface within given constraints,
optimizing for a desired property such as learnability of efficiency of use)
Methods for implementing interfaces(e.g. software toolkits and libraries:
efficient algorithms).

Techniques for evaluating and comparing interfaces.
Developing new interfaces and comparing interfaces.
Developing descriptive and predictive models and theories of interaction
