Transformer Winding

Transformer winding transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through a transformer's winding. There are two main types of windings - low voltage (LV) and high voltage (HV). The arrangement of the windings in a transformer can take several forms including disc, helical, double helical, multi-layer helical, cylindrical, and cross-over windings. Key specifications for designing transformer windings include placing the LV winding closer to the core than the HV winding, providing taps on the HV winding, using stranded wires to carry high currents, and chamfering the edges of rectangular conductors used in the windings. Common materials used for windings include copper and aluminum due to their conductivity and thermal properties. Larger

Transformer Winding

What is transformer?
A transformer is a static device that
transfers electrical energy from
one circuit to another through
the transformer's winding.

There are two types of

transformer.
Step-up Transformer
Step-down Transformer
What is transformer winding?
The winding which is used in a transformer is called
transformer winding
 LV winding
 HV winding

Turns Ratio = Step down transformer

Step up transformer
According to the arrangement there are 6 types of
winding-
a) Disc Winding
- used in high capacity transformer.
- conductors can be single-stripe or strands
connected in parallel.

- stranded conductors
of rectangular or circular
cross-section can be used.

- separated from each

other by press-board
spacers.
b) Helical winding
- wound in axial direction along a screw line with a
certain inclination.
- Spacers are provided to provide support and also to
provide path for oil flow.

- In transformer
having high current
rating, a no. of strands
of conductors may be
connected in parallel
in each turn.
c) Double Helical winding
- used in LV winding of high power rating transformer
- while the current rating and hence no. of parallel
conductors required
is high and single
helical winding with
normal height can not
feel up the window
height properly , this
type of winding is used
d) Multi-layer Helical winding
- used for HV winding of transformer
- large no. of turns are divided in a no. of radial layers
to restrict the total height of transformer.
e) Cylindricalwinding
- individual cylindrical layers are placed axially one over
the other.
- used in transformer with high current and low voltage
rating.
f) Cross-overwinding
- each coil consists of a no. of layers with a
no. of turns per layer.
Some Specifications to design Transformer winding

 LV winding is placed nearer to the core and HV winding

is placed outside.

 Taps are provided on the HV winding.

 Multiple stranded wires are used instead of a single thick
conductor for carrying large current.
 Rectangular conductors are preferable in LV winding
 Rectangular conductors are not preferable in HV winding.
 The edges of rectangular conductors are chamfered.
Materials used as transformer winding
Copper, Aluminum
High conductivity
Low-temperature coefficient
High thermal conductivity
Light weight
Cooling of transformer winding
Due to copper loss (i.e. I^2R) temperature will
increase in the winding and it will damage the
winding insulation.
For small transformer heat are cooled by air
circulation and radiation of heat.
But for large transformer, transformer is immersed
in transformer oil.
