Urbanization
• This refers to the population shift from rural to urban area,
the decrease in the proportion of people living in rural
areas, and the ways in which societies adapt to this change.
• It is the process by which local government units (towns and
cities) are formed and become larger as more people begin
living and working in central areas.
• Urban growth is not only characterized by increase in
population but also thriving business and economic
activities, and adapting to modern & accessible technology.
Industrialization
• This is the process by which an economy is transformed
from primarily agricultural resource-based economy toward
an economy based on mass manufacturing.
• Characteristics of industrialization include economic
growth, more efficient division of labor, and the use of
technological innovation to solve problems as opposed to
dependency on conditions outside human control.
• It is usually associated with increases in total income and
living standards in a society.

• Tokyo (Japan) remains the top megacity by 2030 with 37 million population
followed by New Delhi (India) with 36 million population.
• MegaCities are largely multicultural, cosmopolitan, and thrive on a service

Impact: Local authorities in Metro Manila have shown

creativity and innovation as they responded to the Covid
pandemic. Taking cue from the national government, they
devise proactive measures to address key issues.

• Self-contained communities with complete facilities, amenities and services
that can withstand challenges of climate change, social-cultural issues, and
economic downturns are considered sustainable.
• Real estate companies and developers are now marketing this concept to
attract both investors and locators.
• They actually serve as model communities
Impact: These type of mixed use enclaves would

characteristically have low incidence of poverty,
unemployment, social unrest, criminality, and mortality.
Good masterplanning creates sustainable communities.
MG#58: Productivity and Work-Life Balance
• Many urban communities place a premium on an ideal lifestyle which can
achieve both an optimal productivity and a good work-life balance
• This is a prime consideration for professionals and executives when
migrating or changing careers
• There are just some cities where living can be very toxic while some are less
stressful.
Impact: This poses a challenge to all career-oriented

people. Identify one’s stressors and developing a simple
action plan to eliminate such stressors as they are key to
achieving work-life balance.
MG#59: Gross National Happiness Index
• Bhutan was the first country to have a Ministry for Gross National
Happiness
• Gross National Happiness Index is now a new indicator of economic
progress and development, a more radical version of the Human
Development Index.
• The criteria includes a good balance of personal, career, and social life.
Impact: Authorities have to be familiar with the criteria for

gross national happiness index and seek to apply them
when serving constituents.
MG#60: Green Cities
• Greening of buildings, major thoroughfares, public places, and other urban
spaces has now become a fad among urban planners and designers
• They do not only espouse planting but also using clean and renewable
energy to make the entire city function.
• Green cities save a lot of money as they are efficiently run, no corruption,
and has a flourishing rich heritage.
Impact: The major challenge here is the capability of

LGUs to raise investments for green technologies and
designs (urban renewal strategies) and sustain them
through their constituents.
